Obituary of Marguerite Rose Wharnsby
After a brilliant full and meaningful life and a 32-year battle against cancer, Marnie passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, at the age of 81.
Marnie was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Bill (2017). Marnie is survived by her children, Cathy Brown (Ken), Tim Wharnsby (Kathy Broderick), Liz Wharnsby (Said Arazm), David Wharnsby, grandchildren Matthew Brown and Erica (Brandon) Sharp, sister Bernice Wettlaufer, sister-in-law Sandy (Paul) Kalbfleisch and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her parents Ed and Sylvia (nee Dorscht) Bordman, brother Harold (Shirley) Bordman, sister Ruby (Ab) Mathers and brother-in-law Ken Wettlaufer.
Marnie was a member of St. Louis RC Church in Waterloo. Early employment at Bell Canada and CKCO-TV but flourished as an entrepreneur with the Goodie Basket Company after earning her BA at University of Waterloo. Volunteering and giving back to the community was a huge part of Marnie’s life and included 50 year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, was heavily involved with Freeport Hospital’s gift shop for many years, a charter member of Best Friends of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, 30 year member of University Catholic Community – St. Jerome’s, and a volunteer for Out of the Cold Breakfast at St. Louis with close friend Helen Wicki. Marnie was an avid gardener, both at home and with the K-W Garden Club. She had a passion for travelling, entertaining, shopping (whether she needed it or not), attending the theatre and music concerts and loved a round of golf now and then.
The family wishes to thank all of Marnie’s caregivers from Waterloo Region Palliative Care, and family friend, Tracey Schlosser. Their kind and thoughtful care of Marnie and our whole family was exemplary. We are so very grateful.
According to Marnie’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Louis RC Church, 53 Allen St. East, Waterloo on Monday, July 1st, 2019 at 2pm with Rev. Phil Reilly as Celebrant. A reception will immediately follow at the church. A private family interment will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Waterloo, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region and OneROOF Youth Services would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy.
