Just learned of Dr. Johannesen's passing as I was about to reference a concept he taught me in my undergrad at Waterloo in 1999. By that time, he was by far my favorite professor and someone who I daresay considered a friend upon graduation. He was a lovely man and certainly one of the most brilliant people I crossed paths with in my seminal years. He was there for me both academically and personally when life's challenges presented themselves and I always valued his keen insight and humanity.
God Bless Stan.
All my love to his family.

We are saddened to hear of Stan’s passing. He was a colleague and good friend over many years. In addition to his talents as a teacher, historian, and writer, his many and varied interests always made him terrific company. Our condolences to Penny and his children. Rest in peace, Stanley.

Our deepest sympathy to you, Penny. I'm so glad we got to see you and Stan last September at the music festival on Belmont Avenue. It was a real pleasure seeing you both enjoy the blues music so much. I'm sure you have many happy memories of your life with Stan.
We will be happy to make a donation to the hospice in Stan's honour. --Wendy Stocker and Stephen Jones

You never know how you'll affect someone's life, so I just wanted to share with Prof. Johannesen's family some fond memories of him ...
Still in high-school and through the Student Summer Job Centre, I met him in the summer of 1975 when they hired me to do some antique refinishing and house painting for my summer job.
I knew nothing about antiques, but in the short time that I was there, Prof. Johannesen taught me about how to remove different finishes (and what to leave alone!), he explained "dovetails" for the drawers, how the furniture artisans would try to make plain pine look like Striped Maple, and the beading/routing that he had planned for refurbishing a corner cabinet.
... and, on couple breaks in the work, a little American history when I asked for perspective ... always interesting.
When the work was running out, they got me enough work for friends of theirs to finish my summer.
Best summer job - EVER!
Forever Grateful. RIP. Sincerely.

Although I’m sure Prof. Johannesen wouldn’t remember me, as it’s been many years since I was in his class, he had a immeasurable impact on my educational career. I was a mature student when I took a class, wondering if schooling was for me, and his history class opened my mind to the potential of the study of history. His passion for history ignited my love for the subject, and now I have two history degrees under my belt. I was immeasurably lucky to have Prof. Johannesen be my professor, and was saddened to see of his passing.
