Jim and Rebecca have been dear friends of ours for many years. I regret not having had the privilege of meeting Alan, and with the many anecdotes Jim has shared with me over the years, even more-so.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jim, Rebecca, Kathryn, John and extended family.

I'm very sorry to hear of Prof. Plumtree's death. It's inspiring to read of the great impacts his research had around the world, and I hope thinking about the lives he improved will provide some solace to his loved ones. I also hope they'll have a chance to have a picnic and share memories of his life next summer.
The Faculty Association of the University of Waterloo will make a donation to the University of Waterloo in Alan's memory. Please know you're in our thoughts.

Sylvia Studman, widow of David Studman
As the English “in-laws “ of Jonathan, David and I were made most welcome to Canada by Alan and Diana at our first meeting around 12 years ago.
We continued to meet them in UK as well as many family occasions in our Canadian visits.
I have of course continued my visits following the death of husband David in 2012.
Alan and Diana always made me welcome and included with the family occasions - be they at the home of Rebecca or Jonathan.
I learnt of the “Giant” status Alan brought to the University of Waterloo during these years.
Renowned for his outstanding intellect andInnovation world wide.
Indeed on a Danube cruise conversation with a fellow guest another traveler overheard me mention Plumtree in Canada.
He was an engineer and former student of Alan at Waterloo. Full of admiration and acknowledged the debt of gratitude he owed his Professor.
I take this opportunity also to salute the loving dedication and steadfast support Diana gave to Alan in recent years. Beyond the call of duty.
I am pleased to have Alan in my life experience- a life well lived - a great benefit to Waterloo, Canada and the world at large. At rest.
Sylvia Studman

Diana;
We were saddened by the news of Alan's sudden departure. I have spent many, many hours with Alan in several capacities and he has always been the 'words of wisdom' in the room! He was selfless, generous, outgoing, supportive, and intelligent. He was the one you wanted to be the 'last person in the room when you made a decision!' He was truly exceptional!
Barb has also worked with Alan and enjoyed those years immensely. She also enjoyed many glasses of wine with Alan. He did love his wine; and I had my share with him as well!
He will be sorely missed; a huge loss!
Best wishes to you and your family!
Gerry, and Barb

Diana, Alan's family members, friends:
I am deeply saddened by Alan's passing. I met him shortly after i joined the university in 2009. Over the years, i have come to enjoy my many conversations with him and grow great respect for his sharp mind, deep thinking, energy and kindness.
Alan was one of the pioneers who put the Faculty of Engineering and, in turn, the University of Waterloo on the map. I will miss him very much

Dear Diana,
It is with great, great sadness in our hearts to hear of Alan's passing. Alan was kind to everyone in every way possible and especially made our family feel so welcome when we arrived in Waterloo. He was a giant in the field of engineering and great humanitarian who solved problems for the poor and needy such as the Waterloo Pump which is still today used in villages around the world to provides safe drinking water.
He never expected any accolades or rewards but enjoyed working with his graduate studies and colleagues solving important materials problems. He is among one of the longest serving employees at the University of Waterloo.
I will always remember him as the "wonderful gentleman whom I had the opportunity to befriend at Waterloo."
Our deepest condolences to you and your family.
Pearl and Tom Sullivan
