Sandy,
Viv and I are deeply saddened to learn of Jim's passing.
I will remember his smile, his friendliness, his ease of conversation, his determination to do his best and to do it well, deserving the distinction of graduating first in our medical class.
On one of the too few occasions, following graduation, when seeing Jim, he talked about needing a new challenge. "I think I'm going to get my pilot's licence."
There could not be a drop left when his full glass of life turned over!
I mourn. I am happy to have known Jim.

We, the Cuthbert Family, are so terribly saddened by Jim’s passing. The Swann family were all so very kind in helping us crazy Scottish people settle into Guelph from Peterborough and Edinburgh, Scotland, when George joined McNeil. They had us every year for their fantastic family Thanksgiving dinner, where we joined usually about another 15 or so family and friends for a wonder celebration. We all so appreciated their sincere warm, caring, friendship. Although we have not seen so much of each other since retirement, we did endeavour to get together with a small group of retirees prior to Christmas each year to catch up and these were special times with Jim and Sandy. George always talked so highly of Jim and all his interactions with him at work. He said he was so clever and knew so much but never made you feel like an idiot, as he quietly explained things to you. I always found him such a wonderful caring listener with a great sense of humour. I can hear his laughter now. We shall miss him so much. We send our sincere condolences and love to Sandy, Chris, Cameron, Craig and Courtenay. He fought the good fight.

Lovely words Bruce. Jim was one of the “good guys”. I worked in KW Emerg from 84-87.My father was a dialysis patient and he was a frequent flyer in the Emergency department. My dad died before I started working in Emerg.
I remember Jim in dealings with my dad and I remember Jim as one the Emerg docs you could always count on and would never belittle a nurse. Always ready to teach and always a smile for a patient. KW was well served having Dr. Swann in our midst. RIP.

We’re deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend Jim. What an amazing person - full of life, wisdom, intelligence, and humour. When the conversation raised a question of who, or what, or when, heads always turned to Jim for the answer. During golf, we delighted at his shouts of joy when he snagged a long putt and his smiles when his drive sent the ball to the corn field. We will miss him very much and send our sincere sympathy to the family.

My friendship with Jim is a very important part of my life. In reflecting, I realize that I have probably broken bread with him more than a thousand times, from the infamous Leonard Hall cafeteria to the Medical House dining room. We were at Sandy’s and Jim’s wedding, 50 years ago this month, and he participated in ours a year later. At Queen’s he was the top of the class, a varsity athlete, an active participant in the activities of our small class and an all-round good guy. For all his success, I never heard him boast or gloat, or even talk about his high achievements. He never took pleasure in anyone else’s failures or misfortunes, not that he was unaware of the foibles of a variety of characters we encountered along the way in medical school. Some of my more hilarious moments at Queen’s involved listening to Jim recount various tales about various people, lacing those tales with an incredible wit, and frequent profanity that always served as an integral part of the wit. However funny these tales were, they were never biting or acerbic. I cannot imagine Jim ever hurting anyone.
Probably the demarcating event of his 6-year tenure as a Queen’s student, and his entire life occurred at age 19. He met Sandy Haight and was immediately smitten; a transformation had occurred, and it was obvious to all those around him. It is difficult to think of Jim without thinking of Sandy.
In the years after Queen’s when our friendship was, for the most part, remote; it was obvious that his intensity and zeal were focused on his family and profession, and of course his successes in life continued. He was a fine character, who brought joy and energy to those around him. All of us who knew him were the better for it.

Deepest Condolences to the Swann family. As many others have already stated Jim was an amazing gentleman. During my time at McNeil I had the opportunity to work & travel extensively with Jim. During these travels we always seemed to come back with some funny stories that I will always cherish. After my retirement from McNeil, Jim was relentless in convincing me to come and work with him while he started the HPR clinic in Kitchener. This was an enormous undertaking but Jim was always calm and cool and most importantly kind to everyone. Jim I thank you for the many opportunities you afforded me and will always remember you fondly.

Please accept our deepest condolences for your loss. Jim was one of those amazing people that we’ve been lucky to know and will forever remember, from the matter-of-fact physician, to the no-nonsense businessman, to just the good, good man. And of course, the best power napper on commercial flights – especially those to Philadelphia. Most impressive, though, was his ability to work hard and play hard – not the cliché expression, the real deal. He will be sorely missed by all.
