Andy was a long time friend/musician. I spent most of my High School and early years growing up with Andy. I first met Andy in the fall of 1976 at CHCI and I will never forget it. My Grade 9 year and Andy was in Grade 11 at the time. I was coming down the hallway and came around a corner and I could hear Maynard playing "Chameleon". As I approached the Music room it was clear where it was coming from. As I entered the music room for the first time, I look over by the then record player and who is standing there with the Album in his hand. Andy! He was with Greg Stroh and the room was empty except them and they looked like a pair of kiddies in a candy store. The look on their faces as they heard Maynard playing those high notes was priceless. Andy was completely blown away by Maynard then and continued to be a fan right up until the day he passed away. I proceeded to tell him I can play that high and then grabbed a trumpet to play right at both of them to prove it. Andy and I spent countless hours together from that day forward for many years in what would be our developmental/musical experimentation years. We used to go out to the country late at night and and play under the stars together in the middle of nowhere playing together, playing licks at each other. Listening. We would go on and do many gigs together over the next several years. There are lots of stories about Andy. He was one of a kind and I'm going to miss him dearly. RIP my friend.

Andy was a true musical spirit in every sense. Playing with Andy will always be remembered as a very special time. He brought the true meaning of "soul" to jazz. A master technician and one of the most gifted sax players I ever had the privilege to perform with. My memories of playing with Andy are cherished and will never be forgotten.

I was very sad to hear of Andy's passing. Andy was several years ahead of me as I came up in the K-W music scene in the 80s, and I always looked up to his playing. Any opportunity to make music with him was a joy.
Andy and I were also among a group of guys who made several trips down to Saratoga Springs NY for the Newport Jazz Festival - I have many fond memories of our hangouts.
One of the things that I remember Andy used to say was "No one else can be in my tree." I often go back to that piece of valuable advice, even to this day.
Thanks, Andy.

I got to know Andy when we played together for a number of years. He and my late husband, Gary, performed many gigs together including very memorable performances with the late Bill Gillard as well as many concerts with John Zadro. Andy was so incredibly passionate about his music. But more importantly, Andy was a kind and gentle soul who made a difference in the lives of those fortunate enough to have known him. I know you continue to make beautiful music, Andy. Taken far too soon-miss you!

Andy and I shared many musical collaborations over the years. His on stage presence was truly sincere and entertaining.
We shared a lot laughs and his funny stories. Andy was a kind and warm person who gave more than he received. He connected with his students and the audiences he performed for. I will miss his music and our friendship.

I was fortunate to know Andy better as a member of the Phoenix Jazz Group over the past few years. Rehearsals usually started late as conversations lead the beginning. Andy always had time for good conversation. He brought creativity and virtuosity to the ensemble.

Andy taught at University of Guelph for many years, and played in many noon concerts there. It was a pleasure to know him, and his dog, and I was glad he was able to put together a group to play for our wedding reception in 2010.

Andy was a longtime musician/friend. I was shocked to hear of his passing. When I was asked to play at KCIs 150th reunion in 2005, I put my 6-pc band back together and thought how nice it would be to add one extra player--a saxophoninst. Who else would fill the bill, but Andy, who graciously accepted my request. When the gig was over and everyone was packing up I thanked Andy and told him--sincerely--he was the "icing on the cake!" You will be sorely missed, Andy. Keep swinging on the other side, till we meet again.Trev Bennett

I had the great honour of Andy trusting me with his instrument repairs. In our short visits he would tell me about his upcoming gigs or reminisce about a previous gig. The highlight of the visits for me of course were when he would play what I just fixed. I will always remember the amazing player and great music.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Andy. He was not only an inspiration to me, but a cherished friend. I was fortunate to spend a lot of time with Andy during the 1980’s and ‘90’s, jamming, listening to music, and just hanging out. I will never forget the road trips to Toronto with Andy, spending hours in record stores finding jazz gems amongst the thousands of records. Andy always had a clarinet or soprano saxophone with him, and it became a tradition to drive down Yonge Street with the windows down, while Andy played sizzling solos from the passenger seat...the glorious sound would roll and echo through downtown Toronto, and many a head would turn with wonder and delight. If any musicians are interested in paying a personal tribute to Andy, take an instrument to the Pioneer Tower in Kitchener and play for him...it was one of his favorite places to do solitary outdoor playing, and I was honored to be invited to improvise there with him. I will miss you greatly Andy, and look forward to our future improvisations in another realm.

Andy taught my son saxophone for a short time. He was so patient, kind and a master at this beautiful instrument. He saw the musicality in my son and was very encouraging. We want to send our sincerest condolences and are so very sorry for your loss.
