Obituary of Inge Weissmann

Inge Weissmann

Jan. 6, 1922 - May 27, 2021

Inge left us with loving memories at the age of 99. The beloved wife of Leonard Weissmann for 68 years, until his death in 2016, Inge was the dear mother of Michael Alexander (and wife Kathy) of Kitchener and Barbara Joy (and spouse Jim King) of Southampton. She was pre-deceased by her younger sister Annemie.

Born Ingeborg Hedwig Kupferschläger in Ludwigshafen/Mannheim in Germany, Inge immigrated to Canada with her husband Leonard and their two year old son Mike in 1951. After settling in Kitchener, daughter Barbara was born in 1953. Inge worked at Goudies Department Store before putting her bookkeeping skills to work helping her husband establish and manage his business as a denturist.

A consummate host and tour guide, Inge happily introduced Canada to visiting friends and family. In travels abroad she developed a special fondness for Barbados.  A good cook, Inge was always ready to invite anyone for a meal. Dining at restaurants with friends was a diversion she enjoyed, usually ending in a specialty coffee.

When arthritis made walking difficult Inge joined a swimming class and made a new set of friends. She put her swimsuits to good use in hot mineral spring pools in California, frequently joined by her daughter Barbara and other family and friends.

Inge instilled a love of reading and a lifelong appreciation for nature in her children, taking them to the library at an early age, on walks along the Bruce Trail and to favourite spots along Lake Huron, from Bayfield to Tobermory. She was delighted when she and Leonard were able to have a cottage built in Southampton. Visits to the Stratford and Shaw Festivals were another annual tradition.

A caring mother, wife and friend, Inge nurtured her friendships over decades. A friend of Inge’s was a friend for life.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at The Village at University Gates and to Inge’s Seniors for Seniors caregivers Bev Gooden and Marybelle Aldham. We thank them all for their love, care and support during these last years.
