Alison and I, along with our kids, share our heartfelt sympathy with the entire Green family on the loss of Roger, whom I could never stop calling Doctor Green or Professor Green.
I had the pleasure of growing up around Professor Green, being his student, being the son of a colleague, and then being his friend and neighbour. My entire family enjoyed our chance meetings with him at Starbucks/Chapters or on a walkabout. During all of my encounters with Doctor Green, in any of the above capacities, he never failed to amuse me. I can just hear the implication of someone’s poor judgement in a story of professional woe, or the innuendo in a tale somewhat naughtier. I can see the look over his glasses, and I can anticipate the inevitable, “Hmm?, hmm?” as he waited for understanding to wash across my face.
Professor Doctor Green, I wish the bureaucrats in heaven Godspeed in their new era of close inspection.
Dev Handa, Alison Waltch, Zoe and Marco

First of all, my deepest condolences to you Connie and family on the passing of Roger. I met Roger in the early 70's when I started as a young Professor in the School of Architecture. Roger was always very helpful in finding my way in the Civil Department. Our friendship has continued over the years with the occasional lunch at the Proof restaurant where we would reminisce and chat about the good old times at the University. You will be greatly missed my dear friend, but we will have lunch again one day.

Hi Connie:
I'm so sorry to hear about Roger's passing. It seems like so many of us are losing our life partners. From my experience I can say that the pain gradually eases, but many times a day I miss Cathy and many tears still fall.
Let me know if I can be of assistance.

We were so saddened to hear of the passing of Roger, such a sweet, gentle soul. We fondly recall lots of fun games of bridge and will greatly miss him. Roger was always so interested in following the progress of our grandson, Alexander, as he completed his studies in engineering at the University of Waterloo, and we have made a donation to the University. We send our thoughts and condolences to Connie and family.

Roger, as my mentor, obviously meant a lot to me and I know he meant a lot to all those whom he taught. Michael Bartlett phrased it more eloquently but, in my own words, there is a network of “decent” engineers who were Roger’s Master’s students, where without working hard I can name five as some of the best bridge engineers I know. At the same time, someone else will know another group of his that is just as good. They now teach the next generation of engineers, either in the workplace or in the classroom, based on the foundation that he provided and the knowledge that could be scribbled on a napkin at the coffee shop. At the time I did not drink coffee but knew to go anytime (which was often) that the opportunity presented. His genuinely humble personality was evident when I was talking to his granddaughter, in that she did not appear to have a full understanding of the mastery that he had and the ability to deconstruct a problem to first principals. The obituary says he enjoyed calls from his past students - it was a privilege to be able to phone and to always be welcomed. I will miss him greatly. My thoughts are with you Connie, Martha, Elizabeth and family.

Roger’s passing marks the loss of an especially fine engineer, educator, mentor and friend.
I first met Roger in September 1979 – I had been assigned, as a new Waterloo MESc student, to TA his CivE 414 Advanced Concrete Design course. But our first meeting had nothing to do with concrete design: “have you ever seen a fatigue failure?”, he asked. He enthusiastically shared photographs of the axle of the family tent-trailer, which had just failed on their summer vacation with classic beach-mark fracture surfaces (well, it was hard to see the failure surfaces on the photos, but he assured me they were classic beach-marks). He briefly described the run-around the manufacturer was trying to give him, and his response to it, and I then first recognized his tenacity when rooting out the source of a technical problem.
That fall was challenging because I’d not participated in an undergraduate Co-op program so I was marking assignments submitted by students who were older, more technically experienced, and seemed mostly to be taller than me. Roger was very supportive, using free-body diagrams and little sketches of deformed structures to demonstrate how concrete design can be intuitive.
He was also then busy with the development of the structural analysis provisions for the first edition of the Ontario Highway Bridge Design Code, and kindly provided me with an opportunity to contribute to that. He was always patient and very helpful – and it was inspiring to interact with someone with such supreme technical competence. It is staggering to think of the contribution that he and his academic children, grandchildren, and extended family have made to the practice of highway bridge engineering in Ontario and across Canada.
Roger has always been extremely supportive – I expect there is a very long line of former students and junior colleagues who would warmly agree with this. He made the phone call that evolved into my first consulting job in 1982, and we have since stayed in touch (almost 40 years now!). His mentorship, particularly when I started as an Assistant Professor at Western, was unreservedly offered, nuanced, and greatly appreciated. We developed the habit of meeting for lunch on “neutral ground” – a restaurant in Stratford – where he always enjoyed the fish and chips. Over time, the conversation evolved from professional and technical topics to include family and travel themes. Roger’s family was very important, and he was tremendously proud of all of their achievements.
I greatly appreciated those get-togethers, they were always stimulating and often restorative.
Roger was always very much the gentleman – gracious with a subtle sense of humour that he used regularly. He didn’t like it when he felt that others might be jerking him around – just like the tent- trailer – but he kept a very cool head and I don’t recall ever seeing him really angry.
I am grateful to Roger’s family, particularly Connie, for the support they have provided him, particularly in the last 18 months. I wish them very happy memories of their spouse, father and grandfather – a lovely man.

Dear Connie, Martha and Elizabeth,
I was saddened today when I read of Roger’s passing. Roger’s name brings back many memories of learning experiences while working in the ‘Bridge Lab’ at UW.
Helping to build and test bridge model sections taught me to appreciate bridges in a new way.
Roger would take the time to point out many beautiful aspects of bridges, not only locally but from many parts of the world.
Many fond memories of Roger will continue to come to mind as we drive over or pass under bridges in the future.
My sincere condolences to all of you.
Sincerely,
Ken Bowman

I wanted to pass along my condolences, and fondly remember Roger, who was a great man to pass and chat with on Greenbrier Drive. He was also an extremely helpful person to know as a Civil Engineering student at Waterloo.
When I look back on my childhood, it seems there was always a Green there to help…be it Martha or Elizabeth at Camp Tawingo, Connie around the neighborhood or Roger at UW. Few should be so lucky!
You will be missed Roger.
