Margaret Sofia Skowronska-Binek passed away suddenly as a result of a stroke on September 3, 2021.

Margaret was born in occupied Warsaw, Poland on January 8, 1942 to Sophia and Wieslaw, who were part of the Polish Resistance. Margaret and her parents immigrated to Montreal in 1947.

Margaret was a very serious student. She completed her B.A at Marianopolis (1963) and received her law degree at the University of Montreal (1968). Margaret married her soul mate John Binek (d 2019) in 1976, and they moved to Waterloo. Margaret practised immigration law, assisting refugees in their pursuit of freedom and peace in Canada. She was the voice of many who were forced to escape their country of origin due to persecution, violence and war. Even after her retirement, she continued to advocate for refugees, and believed in people and helping them to reach their potential. Margaret’s legacy is that of promotion of social justice and equality for women. She was a true humanitarian and had compassion for all.

Margaret was a past president of the Kitchener/Waterloo CFUW. She was an avid traveler, loved ballet, classical music and jazz, and was an active supporter of the K-W Symphony and the Stratford Festival.
