We are very sad to hear about the loss of Dr. Mavaddat. Our condolences to his children.
When I (Zarrin) started my Master's at UW, my office was located a few rooms away in the same corridor as Dr. Mavaddat and for 2 years, almost everyday when I saw him in the hallway he warmly greeted me and stood to chat and ask if everything is ok with my studies. May he rest in peace by the side of his beloved, kind wife Sima.

I am saddened to learn through another friend and colleague that Prof. Farhad Mavaddat passed away. He was my teacher, my mentor, my colleague, and my friend. I will miss him, as I will continue to remember him fondly.
I admired him as a brilliant teacher whose contagious intellectual curiosity was not confined to his field. He supported me as a young student in Iran, and his confidence in me and in my abilities became the substrate on which my abilities and my confidence grew. In a hierarchical society and a culture of stratified ranks, the humanity in his treatment of his students as his equals was rare and refreshing.
In spite of geographical distance, we kept in touch over the decades since, by email, phone calls, and visits. Though reserved and circumspect, somehow, he found it easy to confide in me now and then. He was nonchalant about the hardships he faced, the injustice and calamities he had survived, and the obstacles that he had triumphed over. But, losing Sima left a big void in his life and in his heart. Through life's ups and downs, he always spoke affectionately of his children. I know his love for Mehrdad and Mitra was immense and unwavering.
I mourn the loss of my friend, Farhad, and I offer my sincerest condolences to Marc (Mehrdad), Nicole (Mitra), Furouz, the rest of his family, and all his friends and colleagues.

When I returned to Iran in 1974 after my graduate studies in the US and was offered an academic position at AMUT/SUT, Farhad had already established a Master's program in computer science within the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and was working on improving the program's laboratory facilities. He was well-respected by students and colleagues alike. I found Farhad very welcoming and supportive, allowing me to integrate into the existing team (which also included our mutual friend, Engr. Armen Nahapetian) and hit the ground running, so to speak. He led the Computing Group and later served a term as Department Chair.
Before Farhad's departure from Iran, we worked on many projects together, including curriculum development, challenges of technology transfer, and culture/language-dependent aspects of computing, particularly adapting Western technology to the needs of Iran and of the Persian language. After his departure, we stayed in touch over the years and, when I also moved to the West, we had occasional mini-reunions with a couple of other AMUT/SUT colleagues. We had been planning the next event in our series of mini-reunions, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
My sincere condolences to Farhad's children, Mehrdad and Mitra, to other family members, and to all those who knew this noble and distinguished man. May his soul rest in peace!

Our condolences to Farhad's family and all who knew him. This is a great loss for all.
Though our age difference was not great, Farhad took on the role of a mentor when I started my teaching career in Iran. The relationship was to become a valuable personal and family friendship.
I well remember some of predictions Farhad would make, during tea and lunch breaks in the university, about the future of Computer Science, many of which we have seen come true over the years.
His wisdom and foresight extended far beyond technology onto many aspects of life. Though the frequency of our get-togethers with Farhad had become less over the last few years, Stella and I often remembered and talked about his profound and philosophical view of life.
