Please check my comment on the funeral home post of Tom Read’s obituary. Tom was a great friend and I deeply regret not keeping in touch with him when I ceased to officiate track and field.

I am so sorry to discover two years late of the death of Tom. Tom was a great friend that I met through Legion Track and field. Tom was an incredibly hard worker for track and field and was meet director for many, many years for Legion competitions at not only district level but at provincial and national levels, as well as being a well respected track and field official. I was surprised that his obituary did not mention his links with the Legion. My connection with Tom was through track and field and when my ability to continue officiating declined I fell out of contact with Tom for which I deeply regret. Tom was so considerate of not only the competitors but with officials and coaches and it was always a pleasure to work with him. I miss Tom and I am so sorry I did not keep up my contact with him when I ceased to officiate track and field.

This is indeed sad news. Tom held tight to his chest his passions. He was dedicated, thorough and had a wealth of knowledge in the projects he took on. My sister Janice and I assisted Tom many years in his role in Legion District Track and Field - he encouraged followers wanting to share all he knew. He accepted all for who they were. Our phone updates will be missed as will the welcome notes of special calendar events. Lest we Forget - Rest in Peace

Tom was a valued member of the K-W Sertoma Club for 44 years and his dedication and good will are going to be greatly missed. He was a very active member of not only the Sertoma Club, but also the K-W Sertoma Speed Skating Club that he also became involved with all those years ago.
Tom was always there to help and was involved with Christmas Miracle, Bang-O-Rama, Speed Skating, The Sertoma/LaSertoma Foundation, Wonders of Winter, Conventions, Fundraising Events, Bingos, Spaghetti Dinners, Boat Cruises, and many other activities over the years.
In 1986, he became a Life Member of the Sertoma Club and in 2009, Tom was named Sertoman of the Year.
One of the many roles he took on was Bingo Chairman. This involved completing all the required paper work and ensuring there were enough volunteers for the bingos to run smoothly. Tom, himself, worked 95% of those bingos! Bingos are a very important fundraiser for not only Sertoma but many Kitchener charities. Tom became Secretary of the Local Bingo Association and held that position for many years
Tom was a tribute to Sertoma’s Slogan “SERVICE TO MANKIND” and Motto “MAKE LIFE WORTHWHILE”.
Tom’s presence will be missed, but his memory will not be forgotten.

K-W Sertoma Club, Secretary

We are going to miss Tom. Tom has been a fixture of our club for decades. He has served in a variety of roles including Club Treasurer, Vice-President. His dedication and commitment to excellence is beyond reproach. Tom is always there to chip in which ever ways possible. I will always treasure the trips we took together to many Regional Conferences. The many meals we shared as well as laughter will be remembered.
Tom will always be in our heart.

Sad to hear this news. Tom & I worked together closely in the KW Sertoma Club & with the Foundation. He always helped me. A good & decent man who did a lot of good for a lot of people. I don’t think many people actually knew/know all that he did over many years. He certainly will be greatly missed. RIP Tom ….
