On behalf of our family we send our condolences to Alf's immediate and extended family. Gone too soon. I guess our association with Alf goes back to our living on the same block on Manor Road in Toronto in the very early 80's. Our boys, Ian and David played some with Gerrie and for awhile remained in touch. I often would see Alf walking to work at Manulife as I drove down to my clinic; that was a really long hike. Later we all wound up in Kitchener Waterloo and Alf became my deep tissue massage client for a period of time. He took his personal health seriously and worked hard to maintain it. Alf and I, along with his sister Margaret, who we came to know later, shared a common Dutch heritage, which Alf and I appreciated in our interactions and conversation. Alf was a very likeable man who did his work in the world and was able to enjoy the fruits thereof. A good man; he will be missed.

Ellen will probably not remember me but I worked at Manulife in the same department at Alfred. This was of course many moons ago. In that sea of cubicles, he was such a bright light; cheerful and kind and always with something interesting to share. On the few occasions that we had any contact since those years at Manulife, he always impressed me that he was living and loving life to the fullest. His zest for life was to be admired. I'm so sorry for your loss.

For years Alf & Ellen told Wayne and I about Tops’l Tennis & Beach Resort in Destin, FL., where they spent the winter months.
After our first visit we committed to book year after year. On one of many days after a dinner we had planned to go to a movie.
Alf says to Wayne “let’s do a ice cream run before the movie”…now Alf knew all the best shops. After the 3rd store/cone we finally got to the movie. I will always remember Alf for his enthusiasm, love of socializing, kindness and 1+ Desserts.
He was a very special friend.

We met Alf and Ellen on our first cruise to the Caribbean in 1977 and have remained friends ever since. In the early years our families enjoyed many road trips and vacations together. For a number of summers we camped at Outlet Beach Ontario and toured the East Coast of Canada. Alf would entertain us by pretending to blunder his way through setting up his tent to the delight of all of us. I can agree that Alf had a voracious appetite. When the kids couldn’t finish their food Alf would insist on doing it for them. In later years my husband Joe and Alf would enjoy windsurfing together at Toronto Island and Thunder Beach.
Alf was always interested in alternative forms of medicine and he spent many hours enthusiastically educating us on the topic of Homeopathy, etc.
I will always remember Alf’s wide grin, his positive attitude and robust stature. The wonderful times we had together will be cherished.
Love you Alf and Ellen,
Barb and Joe

Goodbye Alf. Your boundless enthusiasm and zest for life infected all around you and somehow made the sun brighter and the sky bluer. We are all better people to have shared time with you (cycling, sailing and wonderful travels). Somehow the innocence of childhood never left you and you celebrated the beauty of life each and every day. We can see you now with an impish grin chatting up those around you. Our condolences to Ellen, Gerrie, Julie, Brian & Nicolas.

I met Al and Ellen 30 years ago on a cruise. My favourite memory of Al is of his insatiable appetite for desserts. Every night he couldn’t decide between the two desserts offered so they started always bringing him both! A good motto to live by “And not Or!”. Many years later we met again at the Waterloo Tennis Club. Ellen, I know I, along with all your tennis friends, are holding you in our hearts.

What remains upmost in our minds is Alfred's insatiable curiosity. He always wanted to know more about everything, whether it was a monument, a piece of art, or a person. His appetite for life was insatiable. He will be greatly missed.
