His first grandchild, I was born when he was just 48 years young, and we went on to have a very special 44-year-long relationship.
He did carpool when I was in public school, took an active interest in my school work, encouraged my writing and other creative and academic endeavours, attended graduations and recitals, and taught me about genealogy, anthropology, archaeology, and horticulture, among many other things.
Almost everytime we saw each other since I was a child, he had a classic novel or book he wanted to give me for my “future library”, with not just a lovely inscription inside, but also a full family tree of all of the characters in the book which he had prepared, hand drawn in his meticulous penmanship, and pasted into the front cover for me. As a child, I didn’t always have an appreciation for this, but I grew to cherish these books he had hand-selected for me.
A true renaissance man, he was inquisitive and curious by nature, always reading, researching, learning, and perfecting his knowledge and his skills.
He was meticulous with his note taking and journal-keeping, documenting the details of his daily life. In later years, he taught himself how to use a computer, printer and other technology, and he put together several manuscripts documenting his decades of genealogical research. In support of some of that research, I went to cemeteries with him as a child to make charcoal etchings of various tombstone inscriptions, and spent time using the microfiche viewer at the library to search old newspaper archives.
He kept life-long friendships and penpals, corresponding with people all over the world until he was 92 years old.
He was adventurous. In earlier years, he spent time hiking in the mountains and volcanoes of the Hawaiian islands looking for ancient artifacts. In later years, he spent hours walking the beach looking for shells, beach glass and collecting jars upon jars of shark teeth.
A creative, outside-of-the-box thinker, he pursued a wide variety of interests, including metalworking, wood carving, landscaping and propagation of disappearing tree species from seed. He designed his own leather goods patterns and taught himself how to sew, eventually owning and operating his own leather sporting glove business that became an international market leader. Some of my fondest memories with him as a child were times spent sitting with him at his drafting table and playing with all of his tools and supplies.
He met my grandmother when they were teenagers, and they eloped the day after he turned 21. He loved her for the better part of 70 years before her passing. They enjoyed dancing and listening to Big Band and other music of their youth, Glen Miller being a particular favourite. I observed my grandfather lovingly care for my grandmother during her battle with breast cancer, and I watched him work hard to move forward and adapt to independent living after her passing.
These are just a few of the unique and special things about him, but I could honestly go on and on.
You will be greatly missed, Grandpa. I hope you and Grandma are dancing together in Heaven. xo

I lived across from Bob for many years and he was always a great person to talk to. He took such pride in his front yard and especially his roses. Later on he asked for some help with his computer because he was doing very complicated stylistic work on it for his other projects. I'll have a Manhattan this weekend to toast Bob.

My thoughts are with Peggy, Lisa, Becky and their families. I have some very fond memories of Uncle Bob from my younger years - always laughing. In the last 20+ years he shared a lot of the history of our family that he had researched so thoroughly which was always appreciated.
Rest in peace Uncle Bob
