Cheryl Mader posted a condolence

This story was written by grandson Scott Mader and read at the funeral by grandson Kyle Rose.
When I was around 12, Poppy taught me how to play Cribbage. When our first game concluded,
he had double-skunked me. For those who may not be familiar with the game of Cribbage,
Cribbage is a card game where two players or teams race to reach a total of 121 points. If a
team wins before their opponent reaches ¾ of the way, the opponent has been “skunked”. This
is bad. If the opponent fails to reach the ½ mark, then they are “double-skunked”. This is worse.
It would be no surprise that, as a brand-new player, I did not perform very well. I also wondered
why Poppy played so hard? He used every tactic at his disposal to make sure his hands had the
highest number of points. We also played “muggins”. This means that if I failed to count some of
the points on my turn and he found them, he would claim them. Couldn’t he take it easy on me
as I was brand new to the game?
Letting up or “going easy” was not in Bobby Mader’s nature. As I reflected on this story, I saw
the valuable lesson he was teaching me. Healthy competition requires both opponents to give
every ounce of their effort. Neither should let up or go easy.
I should also say that while we were playing, though I was frustrated, I was never made to feel
foolish for my lack of skill. In fact, Poppy did the opposite. He encouraged me and showed me
tips and tricks to help me improve. In every game I have played with Poppy, he never made me
feel bad. That’s the other point of the lesson. When opponents give their all in a contest, both
can feel satisfied with the result, win or lose. If you know you gave every effort in the
competition, why should you feel bad at the loss? You can be satisfied with the effort you gave,
the lessons you learned, and knowledge you were bested by a stronger opponent.
What I have come to realize is that this applies to life beyond games and competition. It applies
to my life. If life is the game, give every effort you have. Don’t hold back. You will fail and you will
lose but you need not feel bad. If you gave everything you had, you can be satisfied with the
result. Learn from it and improve. It’s a lesson I will teach to my children. It’s a lesson I teach to
my students in my class. Thank you Poppy for being a great teacher and a great opponent. I
love you.

Eulogy given by grandson by Trevor Rose
As I thought about what I could possibly say today, I realized I don’t need to tell you all, or explain, what type of person Poppy was. That’s because he was present in all of your lives, just like he was in mine.
Speaking on behalf of his 13 grand children, there was never a missed birthday card (usually you had it a week early), missed hockey game, school recital, play.. You name it - Poppy was there early and with a warm smile on his face.
I always loved having him as a role model when it came to growing up and playing sports. The specific stories about his success in hockey and baseball motivated me to chase success in those as well. While deep down I knew I was never going to achieve the same accolades and awards that he did, it’s had a profound impact on my life.
But after all these years of looking up to him and admiring his success in those areas, it really occurred to me that he was a role model to all of us in so many other ways. Showing up for everyone in your life… Being humble and modest, approachable and kind. The ultimate family man, dating back to his decision to steer his focus from athletics to starting a family on the farm with Nan. And just from looking around this room, you can see what an incredible decision that was.
I realized I aspire to be like Poppy every single day in the way I carry myself and how I treat others. The examples he gave all of us are literally invaluable, and will have such an amazing impact for generations.
We were all so fortunate to have known and learned from him. The work ethic he demonstrated, and success he had in so many areas of his life, made him such a special person for so many to look up to. And we will all remember learning everything there is to know about maple syrup in the sugar bush, whacking golf balls around the farm property, and cherished time spent together during all the holidays. I truly couldn’t have asked for better memories and I’ll cherish those forever.
I love you Pop
Trevor

To the Mader Family
So sad to hear of Bobs’ passing. He was truly a Breslau legend in his Junior and Professional Hockey career as well as being an Allan Cup Champion. He was proud of the Breslau Merchants being inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame in The Softball Category .
Bob also liked to golf and was known for his straight down the middle drives and his putting accuracy. Bob, was a Bowler for many years in the Country Gents League. Crokinole was a very competitive event for many years as Bob played in the Preston League with his dad, brother and later his son . The annual WCC in Tavistock was one of Bob’s favorite events.
Bob also loved a good game of Solo or Euchre as well as many other games including Bocce Ball.
Bob and Iva also liked to Host the big family dinners and was really pleased that just about all the Family could attend year after year.
Bob and Iva as team were real community leaders. Bob will be missed by so many family, friends and acquaintances.
