Obituary of David Brubacher

Passed away unexpectedly on September 13, 2022 at the age of 30 years.

Survived by his parents Gordon and Rhonda Brubacher and his sister Sara, currently all of Lincoln, Nebraska. Will be dearly remembered by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. 

Predeceased by grandparents Urias and Sarah Brubacher of Elmira, Ontario, and Levonn and Geraldine Peterson of Oak, Nebraska. 

David was born in Crete, Nebraska, on October 12, 1991. He spent his childhood there and his adolescence in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania and Lincoln, Nebraska. David moved to Canada to attend Conrad Grebel University College at the University of Waterloo in 2010. He has lived in Kitchener-Waterloo ever since working on a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies. 

David used he/him or they/them pronouns. They were a gentle soul who strongly felt the injustices in this world. They were passionate about many social justice issues including LGBTQ+ rights, the lives of other marginalized people and the future of the world. They volunteered for many years at The Working Centre and Mennonite Central Committee Ontario and were committed to their music, philosophy, and friends. David wrote and performed music under the name I Saw the War. You can listen to their songs at https://isawthewar.bandcamp.com/.  

They eventually succumbed to suicide after a long and sustained struggle with mental illness. Family and friends will deeply miss David’s witty humour, profound conversations, soulful songwriting and unfailing kindness.

A memorial service to remember David was held at Stirling Ave. Mennonite Church, 57 Stirling Ave. N., Kitchener on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at 7:00 pm followed by a light reception in the church hall.  A livestream of the service will be made available on David’s tribute page at www.erbgood.com .

A Celebration of David's Life will be held at First Mennonite Church, 7300 Holdredge St., Lincoln, Nebraska on Sunday, October 2, 2022 at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow.
