With many, many others, I want to pass on my condolences to Ed's family, and share a memory.
Ed was an amazing homiletics teacher. No matter how flawed one's sermon, Ed almost always found something positive to say, before offering critiques and/or suggestions. He was a very supportive, affirming person and professor; I always felt that he *wanted* us to do well, and he rejoiced with us when we did.
Peace to all of you, and thank you for sharing Ed with us.

CHERISHED MEMORIES of DEAR FRIEND & COLLEAGUE ED RIEGERT:
Although I was at yesterday's service, which honored Ed's life in every way by girding it under the very Gospel that he served & embodied, Also it was very important that I connect with his family, in that brief moment outside the building (because of COVID--19) which added to the continuing of the Gospel's presence in its full humanity. James, I thank you yet again for your powerful & moving words at the service itself, & Ladonna, I appreciate your willingness to allow me to share a few words w. you face to face, in spite of the weariness & pain of that sacrifice on your part was etched across your face. And, God bless you, Ann, who embraced your suffering family while allowing me & my pastor David Malina to share how Ed impacted on my life. For me, in the midst of this COVID--19 nightmare (& n my case add some memory loss, the result of aging [to be sure] but chiefly due to my Parkinsons) I felt the need to attend the service & say a few words to you thereafter. All in all the memorial service was letter-perfect, embodying the Gospel of God's radical & unwavering love, as demonstrated in the crucified messiah Jesus of Nazareth, & was further personalized & demonstrated by your family as represented by your words, James, & those of the other speakers Dick Crossman & especially by former students Bishop Mike & Mark Harris.
A HANDFUL OF PERSONAL REMINISCENCES: The very picture chosen for display at the service embodied Ed to the last detail (that quirky sense of humor so at the heart of his personality). So, Ed, I will shout cross the celestial Jordan with a handful of these fond memories, most of which your quick wit won every kibbitzing moment we had save one. So, I'll start with that one. You might remember that, as our WLS constant troublemaker, I was always pushing this or that cause. So, the one I highlight at this moment was our dress code. Blue jeans were unacceptable (much to my chagrin). So I wore curdoroy pants with a dress shirt & tie (most of the time), although one cold get by without the tie on occasion. So, at one particular faculty meeting, you poked fun at my socks, which were heavy-duty athletic socks. After getting the requisite laughter, you stated that if $$$ were the issue, you would be happy to fund a pair of decent socks. So, I took his joshing to heart, went to a clothing stpre & bought the most expensive pair of socks I could fund. At our next faculty meeting, just as we were closing, I piped up with a last item of new business, promising to be brief. I pointed to my socks & thanked you for them, Ed, whereupon I presented you with the bill. For the first & probably the last time, I found you speechless, while all of us guffawed with uproarious laugher.
Another memory involved retired prof Dr. Otto Heick. I was told by my colleagues that we profs were all on a first-name basis, which I found most compelling. So, the first time I saw Dr. Heick thereafter I greeted him with a "Hi, Otto, how goes it?" He responded by telling me that he preferred to be called Dr. Heick over against the faculty's policy of operating on a first-name basis. Well, when I reported this at our next faculty meeting, most of my colleagues stated, "well, everyone knows that Dr. Heick insists on this formality." My comment: "perhaps now, we all know." Ed suggested (with that impish grin, emblazoned on the photo we had before us yesterday, that Oz has paved the way for us all to start calling Dr. Heick Otto. Since, my family belonged to Mt. Zion during our first years at WLS, Ed became a strong support of my efforts to push our church in more radical directions. He was especially helpful in guiding me on indigenous issues. A final illustration of Ed's support involved my support of the Skokie Jews in the U.S., who were being harassed by the American Nazis. This effort caused negative reactions from Lutheran colleagues across the country because I took our father figure Martin Luther to task thoroughly & publicly. Ed was therefor me by his telling me that he had stuck his neck out on an issue earlier on which spilled across the country as well.
So, I embrace you, dear brother, colleague & friend--through tears, smiles, laughter & that Gospel so well displayed at yesterday's service, that reflected your life as professor, family member & friend.
THANK YOU FOR THE TEARS, HUGS & LAUGHTER, dear bro & Friend,
Oz

Remembering Ed Riegert
The world has lost a beautiful, kind, compassionate and caring soul in the passing of Ed Riegert. Ed was one of those rare individuals who always made you feel loved and appreciated. His warm smile would light up a room and his gentle countenance brought peace and balance to even the most difficult situations.
I was blessed to have known and worked with Ed through the LutheRanch board and privileged to have called him a friend. We served there together during a time of turmoil and I came to rely on him for advice and a steady guiding hand. He was always the voice of reason with his thoughtful opinions and input. Whether it was discussions at the board table or listening to one of his fabulous sermons, I always felt the hand of God was at work and present.
Ed was a faithful servant of God and deeply loved and respected by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was an inspiration and I am so happy that I was able to carrying on that friendship, even in a small way, years later. I will never forget him, his smile or his laugh. He will be missed and those wonderful memories will be cherished until the day we are all re-united again at the banquet that is waiting for us.
Ladona, James, Ann, Jeff, Emily and Sophia, words cannot ever truly express the pain and loss you are feeling right now but know that others share your grief. Remember that your husband, father, grandfather is still with you. Look for the signs and you will know you are not alone.
With Love and Sympathy,
Elsie Frickey

I have been friends with Ann since we were pre-teens, and therefore have been blessed to have known Ed for many, many years.
Ed seemed to have a seemingly unlimited intellect about every topic imaginable! He was one of the most knowledgeable people I’ve met, and he could so easily converse with anyone about just about anything – and do so with such a calm, mindful presence. You always felt like he was really listening and understanding. I will always treasure his praise of a poem that I wrote which contained about ten verses of Haiku – he was impressed! To have that acknowledgement from someone who was a published writer, and so educated, was humbling, and filled me with pride.
I will also remember his patience – he had to have a lot dealing with Ann and I growing up! :) He looked out for me like his own child on many occasions, and I always felt safe and cared for in the Riegert household. He reminded me of my own father, with his gentle manner and caring ways.
And wow, what a sense of humour! Ed was the definitive of witty, using his amazing language skills to make clever puns, and his incredible story-telling skills to weave tales that had you hanging on his every word.
Another thing I will always remember Ed for is his preaching. He truly, truly had a gift for speaking, and for being able to share his faith. He made sermons relatable, interesting, and even humorous (no easy task!). It was always a pleasure to see him at the pulpit, so passionately giving those of us in the congregation such wonderful nuggets of wisdom.
There is much more I could say about Ed, but I will close with remembering his deep, deep love for his family. The love he had for Ladona, James, and Ann was evident in everything he did. And that love expanded when Jeff was brought into the family, and again with the arrival of Emily and Sophia. He would do anything for any of them at any time… something I witnessed on more than one occasion. He was there for the good (like presiding over Jeff and Ann’s wedding) and the not-so-good (having to rush James to hospital on several occasions), and all the in-between minutiae that makes up a wonderful and well-lived life. That beautiful smile and the twinkle that was often present in his eyes seemed to grow tenfold whenever he talked about his family.
To Ladona, James, Ann, Jeff, Sophia, and Emily - may that love continue to surround you as you start to walk through life without Ed’s physical presence. I hope it brings some comfort to know that he touched many lives, and made an impact on so many people. He will be sorely missed. He was such a very special man, truly one in a million, and I’m so grateful to have known him.

Ed was a breath of fresh air when I transferred from a Roman Catholic Seminary. He gave me permission to experiment and play when preaching... I do remember him suggesting that I might have gone too far with the clerical strip in the Chapel pulpit. John O'Connor [Rev.]
