Earl William "Bruce" Scandrett passed away peacefully on Friday, November 11th, 2022, in Waterloo. Bruce Scandrett, in his 88th year. Predeceased by his parents, Benjamin and Ida, and by his wife, Saralie (Sal), the love of his life (2020). Dear and loving father of Brad (Johanna Violet) and Stephanie, and brother of Margaret (Duncan) Sinclair.
Bruce loved the great outdoors, having been introduced to hunting and fishing during the treasured summers on the farm with his Aunt Florence and Uncle Duff. Those interests ultimately influenced his field of education and career and in 1957 Bruce graduated from Guelph’s Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) with a Bachelor of Science degree and then went on to complete a Master of Science in Microbiology.
Bruce started his career as a science and mathematics teacher at Preston High School. He often said that his true passion was teaching and that he genuinely loved the students. Over time he developed an affinity for administrative leadership and was promoted to Vice Principal and then Principal. After 19 years at Preston High, he was transferred to Forest Heights Collegiate and then promoted to Superintendent of Schools with the Waterloo County District School Board. In retirement Bruce worked many years in planned giving for the United Way of Cambridge and North Dumfries.
His affable nature led to cherished friendships in so many areas of his life including those from the education profession, former students, Trinity United Church, OAC Class of ‘57, The Hunt Club, Rotary and Probus. He will be missed so much.
Many thanks to those who compassionately cared for Bruce at Luther Village, as well as the recent support from HCCSS and the community palliative team. A special thanks to family physician, Dr. Jacob Borys, who treated Bruce with dignity and respect and to pastoral care minister, Katharine Edmonstone, who provided ongoing guidance and support.
