Obituary of Barbara Ann Doris Schaefer

Barbara Ann Doris Schaefer passed away peacefully at Freeport Palliative Care Unit on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at the age of 73.

 

Barbara will be deeply missed by her husband Tom, daughter Lindsay (Jay) Wood, son Anthony, and granddaughters Iona, Aden and Lillian Wood. She will also be missed by her sisters Elizabeth (Michael) Bomasuit and Katherine (Carmen) Place, brother Charles Lindner, sisters-in-law Mary (John Coffey) Steeves, Gail (Jim Krampien) Schaefer-Krampien, Donna Schaefer and Sharon Lindner as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

 

Barbara was predeceased by her parents Wilfred and Marie Lindner, brother John, mother-in-law Elaine Schaefer and brothers-in-law John Schaefer, John Steeves, and Rick Williamson.

 

In 1971, Barbara graduated from Victoria Hospital School of Nursing in London. She began her career in nursing at the International Grenfell Association Hospital in St. Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador. Later, she worked in the ICU and Coronary Care Unit (where she eventually became Nurse Manager) at St. Mary's General Hospital, Kitchener. Before she retired in 2016, Barb worked as a Care Coordinator for CCAC at Freeport Hospital. Barb also achieved a diploma in Parish Nursing from Concordia University in Edmonton.

 

Barb greatly enjoyed her foreign adventures in Japan, New Zealand, and Bolivia. 

 

Barb was a faithful member of the church communities of St. Peter's Lutheran Church (New Hamburg) and Holy Cross Lutheran Church (Kitchener). 

 

Special thanks to staff of Terrace 3 South, Freeport Palliative Care Unit whose care and compassion for Barb was both professional and personal. Special thanks also to Barb's oncologists and caregivers at Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton, and the PSWs and nurses who cared for Barb at home.

 

Cremation has taken place and a Visitation will be held at Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Thursday, March 16th from 2pm - 4pm and 7pm - 9pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 322 East Ave, Kitchener, on Friday, March 17th at 11am. A Reception will follow.
