Jan inspired us through his music at concerts and in our church. Whether the music was tender and reflective or loud and triumphant, it always enriched the text, suited the occasion, or expressed the composer's intent. He generously affirmed the contributions that we or others made to the life of our church or community. And he was delightful to be with. Good conversationalist, interesting and equally interested in others. A warm smile, easy humour, good sense of irony. There was a tender, calm peace about him. We were blessed by knowing him. Thank you Jan. God bless you Margaret

Dear Margaret and family. We got to know Jan and you when he was a teacher and choir director at LDCSS. Came to appreciate and love him and you very much, as a friend, colleague and choir director. He was instrumental in developing the choral program at LDCSS and established the tradition of an annual Christian high school massed choir festival which were very successful and continue to this day. Jan was the closest to a genius as we have met. Was charismatic and a deeply spiritual and committed Christian and witness. May God surround you with his grace, love and comfort as you grieve his loss, and as we are assured he is directing a huge choir of saints and angels now. Love, John and Yetty Joosse.

Dear Margaret and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Jan’s passing and I offer you my heartfelt condolences. I was a colleague of Jan’s in the Faculty of Music since my initial appointment in 1987. As I was an organist during my undergrad days, I was routinely called to serve with Jan (and Barrie Cabena) on the organ auditions, juries, and grad recitals, which I enjoyed immensely. Jan’s attention to detail and impeccably high standards—in performance, but also and in some ways more importantly and impressively, in personal conduct and collegial interaction—stand out to me. He was a wonderful colleague and I cherish the years of conversations with him and of course recall with awe his performances and recordings. I wish the family peace at this difficult time. But please take comfort in the knowledge that Jan touched the lives of so many and in such a profound way.

Hello Margaret,
My deepest condolences to you and your family on the loss of your beloved Jan. He was so kind to me when I first arrived in Kitchener as his successor at St. Matthews. What impossibly huge shoes to fill. Yet Jan was always so encouraging and helpful, putting me in contact with several choral scholars as well as giving good advice.
His many concerts have been a source of learning and inspiration to me and many others over the years.
He, and also you, were such an example to me as human beings as well. The very first time I met Jan in 1997 he was about to take the family on a canoe trip. He was very down to earth and at the same time a great and spiritual musician. I also remember that he volunteered at the Working Centre in downtown Kitchener after he ‘retired’.
I will greatly miss his example and musical inspiration in our community, and will also miss the presence of both of you at our RCCO gatherings.
Blessings, you are in my thoughts. Corinne Dutton.

He added so much to each song creating a wonderful experience. To the family our deepest condolences. We thank-you that you shared Jan with us.

Wilma and I (Harry) would like to express our deepest condolences to Margaret and the Family When Jan and the Overduin Fam arrived in in St.Thomas in 1955 My fam had arr. in 1952. Jan and I were the same age and he taught me organ lessens, and instilled in me the love for playing the organ in church. We got married in June 1963 and Jan played for our wedding. 3 wks later Jan and Margaret got married. We were close friends and enjoyed each others company. In 1961, Jan and his brother Dan moved to london, ON They asked if I was interested in moving in with them, I had a car and they didn't. One year later I moved back home as we were planning our wedding. over the years we enjoyed our friendship. There came a time that Jan and Margaret moved away and eventually we lost touch, regretfully. Through Jan I became our church organist and he instilled my love for organ music. I am very grateful for instilling in me the love of music. You will be missed Jan.

It saddens me deeply that I will be unable to attend Jan's celebration of life ceremony. Jan is a long time friend who gave me so many wonderful moments listening to him play the piano or organ. It was simply incredible the quality of music that flowed through his fingers! Always so humble and always with a smile! I was so amazed by his recovery from his stroke and thanked God for the chance to continue to hear him play. The journey for him now surely involves a continuation of his sharing of his wonderful talent. One of my firm beliefs is that God wants everyone to share their talents and Jan certainly accomplished that in his life! My condolences to the family and trust you will celebrate his well lived life along with your grieving and that will somehow make it easier to say goodbye.

Jan was my organ professor at WLU and he was a gentle and compassionate instructor, never scolding for wrong notes played! He was a great improvisor and I marveled at his ability to improvise expertly on any melody given him. I am sad to lose such a gifted musician and good friend. May his spirit fly with the angels! My deepest sympathies to Margaret and all the family on the loss of this kind spirit. It was a privilege to have Jan as a colleague at WLU, as a fellow musician in many settings, and just as a lovely, interested person to see and chat with as chance would have it. I will treasure the recording of Christmas music we did together with Menno Singers. It was a gift to have seen him and Margaret at the WLU Retirees function hosted by the two of them. I will hold him in my memory.

Jan was a key factor in my life, from his example as my teacher at Rockway and my joy in being a part of his choir with Menno Singers. Jan inspired my career as a teacher in both German and music along with a life-long love of music in so many ways. A highlight of my senior year of high school was when Jan undertook a production of the opera Amahl and the Night Visitors and chose to cast me as the mother in the production. He encouraged and supported all of his students.
His calm and assured presence was an inspiration to all who knew him. As an adult I came to appreciate his friendship and the "twinkle in his eye". He will be missed in so many ways. Thank you Jan, for your life's fine example.
