Uncle Roy was my grandmother’s brother and growing up, he was a constant in our family get-togethers. I will always remember Uncle Roy fondly for his sense of humour, pursuit of good times, and community-mindedness. We would connect at least annually with the whole family for Waterloo County Day where Roy generously treated us all to a theatre production each year. Aside from his volunteer work in the community, he was also a rescuer of dogs from the humane society. His last rescued dog, Ernie, came to myself and my partner Jeff when Roy went to live at Barnswallow. Ernie has been an absolute joy. Roy, know that your pup is in loving hands and we’ll be eternally grateful to you for bringing him into our lives and turning us all into “dog-people”.

Roy was very active in the neighbourhood association. Together, with the city, they created the Park for young and old. There is a huge old Mulberry tree here. I had never seen a mulberry tree until Roy showed it to me.

For the past two-plus years, Roy handled his situation of dependency on others with more grace than one could have imagined. His life at Barnswallow was enriched by the compassionate staff, his roommate Dave and his lifelong friend Barb. She visited him every week to share a coffee and donut, and to make sure he did not want for anything.
Roy was the epitome of a party animal, wanting to share his 'gemutlichkeit'. Shall we all raise a toast to Roy at the next opportunity with our poison of choice, or his favourite, a shot of Yagermeister.
RIP, Roy.

Farewell Roy ... you were always Cousin Roy in our household; meant with love and sincerity because you were family first and made everyone feel so very welcome. Technically you were first cousins with my father Gordon Breitmaier, so I suppose that makes you a once removed cousin to me, one never removed from my heart.
Love ... Rein, Char and Dexter

Uncle Roy was our last family member of his generation. He always lived his life, his way. He endeared himself to his many friends and family. For the last 2-1/2 years we had weekly family zoom chats with Roy at Barnswallow. This included Diane, Nick, Susan, Leah, Barb and our German cousins Conny and Inge, as well as myself. He was able to see us, catch up on our lives and know he was loved. I have fond memories of Diane's and my annual visits to Ontario. We had a "Waterloo Day", which included breakfast at Harmony, shopping at St. Jacob's Market, attending a theater performance and dinner at The Mandarin. Roy also had friends and family gatherings in his backyard so we could all visit. Uncle Roy will be remembered for loving to have a good time, eating, drinking and dancing and for being proud of his German heritage. He will be missed.
Love,
Carol & Gordon

I met Roy when I played midget Baseball . He and Buck were coaches along with Lorne . He sounded a little gruff at first , but turned out to be a pretty decent guy . Later I played in the chipper league against him . If you made a bad play he would say , you’re better than that . I will miss him , my former teammates will miss him , Waterloo will miss him . Good bye Weenie .

In Memory of our cousin Roy
Our travel-loving cousin always met our family members somewhere in the world. It was always important for Roy to celebrate a family party "schwätzfest" when he was in Germany. We had a wonderful time full of laughing, joy and music. There were great barbecues an vacations together. From Fornsbach, Fasanenhof, Grafenau, Weilimdorf, Gruibingen, Garmisch, Jungholz, Frankfurt, Denmark and "Oberes Inntal" just to name a few places.
We miss you Roy

I would be pleased to offer my sincere
Condolence to Roy's family. This man was the glue who always made it interesting to come to the rink day in and day out.
Roy had his pulse, on the mood in the dressing room and was well respected by the players. He knew how to lift your spirits and make you feel comfortable no matter where you stood in the teams pecking order.
He is a man who when you look back on your life, you smile and appreciate more than ever!

I was fortunate to be part of the 1974 warrior CIAU championship team attending the university from 72 to 76.
During those years I made many friends which were mostly teammates but one person who stood out when I think of my University days was Weenie as he was best known.
Roy was a character and “ one of a kind”. He knew everybody and always had a thousand stories to tell. I think we can all agree he was the glue that kept our winning team together.
Rest in peace Roy we will miss you at the reunion but we will raise a glass to you.

When I came to Waterloo from Michigan Tech in 1973 to attend Waterloo and play hockey , I met this character Weenie who was our trainer. As the next 2 years passed , we became good friends and of course he became the team’s unofficial social director. After the 1974Championship he became one of the organizers of our reunions and because I was in Thunder Bay working , those plus the golf tournaments and some Waterloo games were the times I got to reminisce with him. We celebrate 50 years since that 1974 Championship this fall and was hoping to catch up again with him. However, although I won’t be able to, you can be assured that there will be many toasts to him and many stories retold around Weenie. May he rest in peace knowing we all appreciated and respected him both as a teammate and as a friend, a true Warrior!! Doug Colbon #3

My early memories of "Weenie" was on many bus trips following the Siskins...there was no greater fan than him.
At parties in the 60's...near the end of the night...he would have the guys roll up their pant legs and he would lead the march around the hall like the Preston Scout House Band! He was such a fun friendly and caring person to all he met. RIP

My condolences to the family members and close friends of Roy. Thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. “May you mourn not for long that he is gone, but rejoice forever that he was.”
I have nothing but fond memories of Roy. A kind, community-minded man who gave so much to the sporting life in Waterloo. While I interacted with him a lot in local arenas, I recall countless interactions with him as a fastball/softball umpire for many years as I coached my daughter’s teams in Waterloo. His passion for the sport and love of the game was clear and obvious as he continued to enjoy his contributions to the game well into his later years. So impressive and no doubt captures Roy’s approach to all the pursuits he enjoyed.
May he rest in peace.

I will always remember Weenie fondly. Roy was 3 months older than me so we grew up together in Waterloo. I remember Siskin games in the old barn when Weenie was in charge of selling programs and distributing prized to the winners. We enjoyed fastball and when there was disenchantment with the former city of Kitchener Industrial Fastball League Weenie and I formed the former Waterloo City Fastball League. We were both blood donors for many years and we had friendly competition over who would give the most. (Weenie won).. In about 1957 Weenie convinced me to try out for the K-W Junior Dutchmen Football team and we had an enjoyable season even if not too successful.
We miss seeing Weenie at the Saturday morning Navy Club breakfasts!
Rest in peace, my friend !

I will miss Roy. He was quite a character and I don't know anyone who had more friends. Anyone who visited his home knows about the huge lot and garden that he had. This picture is from 2014 - some of the fruits (and vegetables) of his labour, Roy often shared his garden produce with his friends. Doris (his sister) especially liked the green grapes and I appreciated the rhubarb he gave to me. I will always remember picking red and black raspberries and black berries.witjh him.

Sorry to hear about Roy. He and his family were always in the Mary Allen Neighbourhood and the neighbourhood kids often went into his parents store on Moore Avenue. Those were the good old days. Up until fairly recently Roy lived on Allen St. and we lived on John St. Roy was always a friendly guy and has been missed in the old neighbourhood. Condolences to his family. With fond memories.
