Nik Ward-Campbell died peacefully at the age of 75, surrounded by his loved ones. Nik is predeceased by his first wife Dorothée (Pikula), and his parents Sylvia (Leeds) and Douglas Ward-Campbell. He is survived by his loving wife Andréa Balfour, his daughters Belinda Ward-Campbell and Kim Ward-Campbell, his step-children Alexandra Vlcek Whitfield and Andrew Vlcek (married to Michelle), and his elder brother, Iain Ward-Campbell (married to Christine). He was the proud Grandad of seven grandchildren, who adored him immensely.
Born in Wimbledon, England, Nik attended the Chichester Prebendal School, followed by Marlborough College where he enjoyed athletics and earned decades-long bragging rights for his javelin record. At 17, he won a scholarship to attend flight school and obtained his pilot’s licence, joking that he could fly a plane before he knew how to drive a car. He had a brief career in the Royal Air Force, after which he moved to Germany, where he fell in love with and married his beloved Dorothée. They remained in Germany for 13 years and welcomed both of their daughters during that time. From there, Nik and his family made the journey to Canada, where they built their lives in Cambridge, Ontario.
After the loss of Dorothée, Nik was blessed to find love again with Andréa. Nik and Andréa married in 1999, and together they spent the next 24 years living an enriched and full life — from their travels around the world to their Sunday family dinners and summers at the cottage on Lake Simcoe, Nik and Andréa built this chapter of their lives together in their shared love of new experiences and cherished friendships, and their deep love for one another.
Nik was a devoted member of the congregation of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, in Kitchener. He will be sorely missed by the entire St. John’s community.
Nik is fondly remembered by his family and friends for his appreciation of the arts and a good single malt, his distinguished singing voice, his expert ability to recite stories and poems (his Grandchildren were particularly fond of his rendition of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas), his sharp sense of humour complemented by a calming and ever accepting presence, and always having one of his cherished canine companions by his side.
A service in Nik’s memory will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church, 23 Water St. N., Kitchener on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 1 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church from 12 noon - 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be directed to the Choral Scholar Fund at St. John’s.
He who binds to himself a joy
Doth the winged life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity's sunrise.
- William Blake
