To the family of Archie Harms, I worked in the workshop at Luther Village often in the four years I have lived here. My wife, Eloise, and I planned to attend the visitation for Archie in the Great Hall on August 19th. Unfortunately we had a family medical emergency occur that afternoon just before time for the visitation so we did not attend. Please know that we send our sympathy and our prayers. Archie will be missed at Luther Village and we know he will be greatly missed by his family. He was a great man.
Rev. Ray Hagerman, GV 28, Luther Village

We were blessed to have Archie, Ursula, Trudy, Delores and Ted as our neighbours around the corner in Ancaster for many years. Then when we began to attend Hamilton Mennonite Church in 1978, we found the Harms family were our fellow members. After a small car I drove burnt in our driveway in 1986, Archie just gave me his Chevrolet as he was going to replace it. We drove Archie's car, including our son Todd for several years. When we visited the Harms family in their home Archie and Ursula would tell us about the places they had visited and show us items they had collected, as Dr. Harms and sometimes Ursula travelled to attend conferences and give lectures. Archie and Ursula always took an interest in our family of four children and son Owen even had Dr. Harms as one of his professors. Owen also received a summer job in a McMaster lab with Dr. Harms' assistance. We offer our condolences to the children and grandchildren of Archie and Ursula. Love, Murray and Linda Lumley, Toronto

To the Harms family: It was sad to get the news of Archie's passing. I was very fortunate to be one of his first students starting with his undergraduate nuclear course in 1969, on through a Master's and a PhD, and then later as a colleague at McMaster for 25 years. We enjoyed many conversations. I always admired his intellect and valued his mentorship. He touched many lives in positive ways and he lives on in our memories. - Bill Garland

In many ways, Archie was a mentor during my early days at Mac – always calm and keenly interested in history and culture, with a warm and friendly personality. We also had a common colleague, Manfred Heindler from the TU Graz, with whom Archie co-authored “Nuclear energy synergetics : an introduction to conceptual models of integrated nuclear energy systems”. This led to many conversations about Graz, Vienna and Europe in general. And I still have a copy of his book “Engineering in time : the systematics of engineering history and its contemporary context” on the book shelf in my office. I was fortunate to have had Archie as a colleague. Deepest condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

I was a Master student in Engineering Physics under Dr. Harms in the late 70's. He treated his students very well, showing respect and giving credit on research papers where credit was due. Once a year, at his expense, he treated his grad students to dinner at the Faculty Club at McMaster, as his way of showing appreciation to them. My sincerest sympathies to his family and friends.
