I know this family to be so beautiful, loving, kind, welcoming and bright. I’ll forever be grateful for the times we’ve spent together and love you have given me. I am sending you so much love now and always, and am deeply sorry for this loss in your lives. From the stories I’ve heard you tell about your Dedo, it’s so clear to me how much you love him, and how that love continues to surround you. You have such strength in you, and I hope you know that you have so many who love you and are here to support you. Please, be gentle with yourselves.
All my love, Fio

For several years during my youth, I spent so much time in the Kominar household that John became like a second father. Although decades have passed since then, I still have vivid memories of his gentle voice, how he filled his home with music, and the engaged and supportive home that he and Pat opened to family and friends alike. Remembering him brings a smile to my face - and I am sure that many can say the same. What better legacy is there?

I am writing to express my heartfelt condolences to John Kominar's family.
John was a long-standing colleague of mine at Wilfrid Laurier University. I fondly remember the days when we would share lunch in the Central Teaching Building lunchroom during the 1970's and 80's at WLU.
Years after my retirement, when my family relocated to Waterloo, I ran into John and discovered that our new neighbourhood was his long-standing neighbourhood community. It was a very warm and welcoming greeting. It was lovely to see him.
Shortly after that encounter I was saddened to hear that he had serious health challenges. I would receive updates from time to time from his son John.
I am deeply impressed by the palliative care that John received for an extended period of time provided by members of his family. I experience this as a most profound way of caring and love that can be shown by a family and to honour John in this way deeply moves me.
With sadness over your loss and with respect and deep appreciation to all of you.
Sincerely, Ed Bennett

Condolences to the Kominars and their families
We were sad to hear of John's passing. We came to know the whole Kominar family through Kristine and her family. My girls were just 5 and 3 when they got to know Pat, John and their family. They really embraced us being new immigrants and treated our girls like their own grandchildren, inviting the girls to their house to learn how to cook and paint eggs in their tradition. We always remember John as a quiet spoken and very kind man.
Treasure the memories and know that he will always be in your heart.

I was very sad to hear of Mr.Kominar’s passing. Growing up, I would spend a lot of time at the Kominar’s and I often felt like he was a second father to me. He always made me feel welcome, and I remember the conversations we would have over dinner, or on the deck in the backyard. We would talk about our common interest in Photography, and many other subjects.
When I moved to Montreal, I would bring home some Montreal Smoked Meat for him as he always enjoyed that, and every time I walk into Schwartz’s Deli I will always remember the look on his face when I brought some home.
I was extremely happy to have the Kominar family at my wedding, and we still have the photos he took in our study, so for me, he will always be here.
He was a great, kind and generous soul, and the world will be a poorer place without him.

I took a number of courses with Dr. Kominar when I was completing my undergraduate chemistry degree (2001 - 2005). He was one of the best profs I had throughout university and just a wonderful person. I was lucky to have the opportunity work with him as a student. I was very sad to hear the news of his passing. My condolences to his family.

Dr. Kominar was my Chemistry undergrad thesis advisor at WLU back in 2000. He was just the most kind and gentle soul - a real genuine teddy bear. I was just sitting here and he popped into my head so I googled his name and stumbled upon this very sad news almost by accident. My sincerest condolences to his dear family and all that had the privilege of knowing him.
During my time under his thesis advisory, another student and I got to travel with him to Sudbury and met with an academic team we were working with from Laurentian university. He stayed with his daughter and my family home was located on the very same road - a marvellous coincidence that we both enjoyed discovering. He was truly one my favourite and most inspiring educators of my formative years. God speed John. I hope there are many more discoveries to be made in the next life.

Hannah, Thank you so much for sharing your sweet memories. As his family we didn’t see his professional side. It’s lovely to hear his students saw the kindness in him that we saw at home. He was always ready to help and we knew we could turn to him for anything. Although we were hesitant to ask for help with chemistry homework because we knew we would be giving up the whole evening for a chemistry lesson.

John Kominar was a strong, gentle, kind and sincere human, friend and colleague; and a knowledgable and supportive educator to be remembered by his students. I always cherish my conversations with him and carry his memory with me. He remains in my thoughts in a bright zone with a beautiful smile. It has been a privilege to know him and to work with him.

Thank you John ! You were Chair when I started in the Chemistry department. Thank you for helping me with my first times teaching physical chemistry (CH212) and Analytical Chemistry (CH260) way back in the early 2000s. You had taught those courses for so many years before me and never hesitated to share your notes, your opinions, advice and "lessons learned". I think I only got through those early days of teaching (and trying to ramp up a research program) with your help. Thank you Professor Kominar! Teaching methods and technologies have changed but old school "writing on the board" never goes out of style!
