Dear Sandy and Family,
I was so sorry to hear about Ian's passing - Ian's firm gave me my first planning job as a co-op student in the late 1990s and I am very grateful for that opportunity. It was always fun to share a joke around the office and I learned so much from working there. Please know that the Van Hinte family is thinking of you.

I am saddened to hear of Ian’s passing which just came to me from Jonathan Kahn at Blake’s. I had a very long relationship with Ian both through business and personal connections. He was an expert witness in a number of cases I had before the Ontario Municipal Board related to town planning. He expressed his professional opinions clearly and firmly and defended them well.
Dawn and I had many very happy times with Ian and his dear wife and friends at Oktoberfest and on the hills at Osler Bluffs.
We shared his great sense of humour and were witnesses to the love and pride he had for his family.

I wish to express my heartfelt sadness at the death of Ian and to extend my sincere condolences to his Family, numerous Friends , Colleagues, and the community at large.
It was an honour for me when Ian accepted my request to head the Mayor's Task Force on Downtown Revitalization. He brought the full force of his energy, creativity, vitality and optimism to the task. How fortunate Kitchener was to have a man whose sense of duty, service and integrity were dedicated to others. Getting to work with and to know Ian MacNaughton was one of the unexpected blessings and cherished memories of my term as Mayor of Kitchener. I know his memory will live on not only for all he did but also for the man he was.
With sadness and sincerity,
Richard Christy

I worked closely with Ian for 25 years before he retired.
I always thought of Ian as someone who made a significant difference in so many ways and at so many levels: in individual people's lives (not least my own), for clients, in communities that he worked in, for many organizations and institutions that he was passionate about and indeed at the Provincial level as well.
This is certainly a theme that comes through time and time again in the tributes that are pouring in: "he made such a positive influence on our industry", "we owe him so much", " I wouldn't be where I am today if not for Ian", " he was an impact player"....
I will be forever grateful for Ian's generosity, the opportunity he provided me and the privilege to have known and worked with him.
For the family, so sorry for your loss.

As a Senior Ecologist with Ecoplans Limited I had the privilege of collaborating with Ian on numerous planning and environmental projects over 30 years. Ian set a high bar for integrity, professionalism, a keen and inquiring mind, strategic excellence, and showing a genuine interest in the lives of his colleagues and project team members. He encouraged everyone to be the best version of themselves, and certainly led by example. I know he challenged me with excellent questions, provided helpful advice from his extensive experience, and was a powerful force with a stellar reputation throughout the province and beyond. He will be missed. My wife Barbara and I extend our deepest sympathies to the entire family on Ian's passing.

Ian was a fantastic brother-in-law. He worked very hard to blend in to our large extended families, and was accepted well. He was a dedicated family man and a generous provider. He taught me my first ski lessons on our sloped driveway in Shantz Station. The attached photo of Ian and Sandra was taken during a family reunion, from the top of Galiano Mountain with Prevost, Salt Spring, Portland, and Vancouver Islands in the distance. Wonderful memories. He will be deeply missed. Terry

To Sandy, Jonathan Jill Joanna Josh, and family. My deepest condolences. I was very lucky to be Sandy's younger cousin and have the opportunity to see Ian from time to time throughout my life at family functions. He was a gentleman. And very kind. Always had a wonderful smile and made you feel like he was genuinely interested in you. And as a boy, when we cousins would play football, I'll never forget his arm and how he could line drive that ball. My cousins will attest to that . We both had a smile as I had the opportunity to remind him of that recently at my cousin Gary's funeral. So thank you Sandy for bringing him into our lives. He will be greatly missed.

I will forever remember our travelling together through the canal system in France aboard the barge Le Fleur-de-lis.
Visiting wineries and castles, browsing cellars, sampling vintages, but most of all listening to Ian’s unique take on various issues that concern us all.
Fabulous breakfasts and dinners aboard the barge always brought out the relaxing side of Ian , and I know he thoroughly enjoyed the sense of tranquility and freedom while cruising the French countryside.
To Sandy and family my deepest sympathies, and I hope the many memories you hold dear will bring you peace.

What sad and shocking news to hear that Ian MacNaughton has passed away. For me he will always be 'forever young".
I always had a great time with Ian whether it was at wild and ruckus university parties while we passed the time away listening to noisy steel band music in Ian's kitchen; debating pressuring regional planning issues at the UofW planning school; participating in numerous planning meetings throughout the province while he grappled with the difficult planning and political issues of the day; or, more recently, getting together at the 50 year reunion of the UofW planning school on a lovely summer day in June 2022.
Through his passion, knowledge, determination, and good sense of humour Ian made a difference in the world. We will miss him.
My sincere sympathies to Sandy and the entire MacNaughton family.
