Obituary of Joyce Dietrich

Joyce Dietrich, age 92, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones, on Sunday, November 19, 2023.

Joyce was born in Winnipeg to Jon and Rosa Johnson, followed by her siblings Norma, Magnus, Petur and Carl. They were part of a big, loving Icelandic community and family was central to their lives.
Joyce’s early career as a social worker took her to Regina, where she fell in love with and married a young lawyer, Harold Dietrich (deceased in 2005). Together they created a happy home. Joyce was an incredible mom and a driving force behind frequent extended family visits, celebrations and events. She had a fun and free-spirited side that resulted in lots of laughter, crazy adventures and funny stories.
Leaving the prairies for Waterloo in 1973 was difficult for Joyce. However, she soon became an active community volunteer and leader (K-W Garden Club, Probus, Lutheran Women’s Auxiliary, YWCA, and Friends of Big Brothers/Big Sisters) and made lifelong friendships along the way. Joyce loved people, and it showed in so many facets of her life. She loved hosting and attending  events and her laughter and warmth drew others in. Joyce was a life-long learner and travelled the world.

Joyce was a beloved mom to John (Rapti), Rosanne (Steve), Norma  (Glenn), and Bob (Miho). She loved being a mom but, perhaps, loved being a grandma even more. Joyce unapologetically believed that her grandchildren were the best people on earth, Nicole (Josh), Jake (Hannah, and great grandkids, Stephen and Nathaniel), Laura (Richard), Christine (Troy), Jon (Sarah).

She will be deeply missed.
