Obituary of Susan Morton

Su Morton (nee Gleed) quietly left us after a brief illness on the evening of Friday June 14, 2024, at the age of 79.

She leaves behind her loving husband of 46 years Douglas, daughter Heather, brother Peter (Doreen Corry) of Dwight, ON, and many relatives and friends.

She is predeceased by her parents, James and Jean (nee Macpherson) Gleed of North York, her sister Wendy, and brother-in-law Alasdair Wallace of Lakefield, ON.

Doug and Su met at the Engineering, Mathematics, and Science Library at the University of Waterloo. Upon their engagement, Su moved to the Optometry Learning Resource Centre where she got to know over 20 years of Canada’s English-language optometrists.

When her early retirement coincided with the failing health of relatives and a close friend, she spent much time on the road visiting and caring for them, returning in time to teach her weekly ESL class.

Su’s interests were many and varied, from teaching piano in her youth, to later converting our lawn to a low-water wildflower garden and enjoying the birds and insects that visited.  She, Heather and several lady friends made annual trips to week-long courses at the Haliburton School of the Arts.

From university days to post retirement Su often taught English as a Second Language, combining love of language with a desire to welcome new Canadians. She focused on good pronunciation as a key to comprehension.

She frequently had something to add to a conversation, often making a short story long, and always positive.

We will miss her caring ways, kind thoughts, and constant efforts to be helpful.

Thanks go to the many doctors, nurses, and other staff at the Grand River Hospital as well as the many other therapists and helpers along the way. Without your care and compassion, this part of our journey would have been much more difficult.

A memorial service for Su will be held in the chapel of Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Saturday June 29, 2024, at 12 p.m.  Followed by a reception in the Fireside Reception Room.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Grand River Hospital Foundation or an environmental charity of your choice, which may be arranged at www.erbgood.com.
