I was to teach a challenging course in winter 2019, and 1-2 days before X'mas 2018, I was at MC checking the classroom. When I saw that Paul's in his office ... I hesitated for a moment (felt wrong to bother anyone working right before X'mas). I was facing multiple personal difficulties at the time, and overwhelmed with anxiety over the teaching; I cautiously asked if I could seek his opinions on how I should approach it. He generously shared many ideas, and after a long chat, he even offered to help install iClicker for me. But iClicker would not install on my linux laptop ... and Paul showed me multiple tricks to finish the installation. Paul did not need to do any of these ... and certainly could arrange an appointment when the school reopened (it was certainly not a work day when this happened). I walked out of Paul's office totally in awe that there's someone so kind, so encouraging, and so generous and ready to help!

Paul was truly one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met, always ready with a helping hand or a word of wisdom. His warmth and generosity touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dear Robin,
In spite of the shock and sorrow you were certainly under, you managed to do a great job of the beautiful send-off you so much wanted to do for Paul.
Doing that would have no doubt occupied pretty much all of your mind up to yesterday.
But now that the dust has settled and the greiving can start, please know that my thoughts continue to be with you and that you can and should reach out to me by text or by email or meeting in person whenever you want to.
Dear Alice,
You and Paul were joined at the hip, whether you were here or in Montréal!
You were a real trooper and you showed admirable strength yesterday.
You should know that what I said to Robin applies to you too.

Ani and I are so sorry for your loss. We have fond memories of our get-togethers, and of Paul's ingenious "Codenames" definitions. This was a big, untimely loss -- the world needs more people like Paul.

A decade ago I spent a LOT of time with Paul, Sean Scott, and Steve Furino supporting folks in Math who were involved in various online and (especially) early day Möbius projects through my work with the Centre for Extended Learning. As so many others have noted, Paul was kind and an absolute pleasure to spend time with. He made an impact on me and I thoroughly enjoyed working with, and learning from, him. I will miss him and extend my condolences to Robin, Alice, and all of his other favourite people .

I am so sorry for your loss. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
I had many interactions with Paul over the years, but I remember most his help during COVID. Dear Robin and Alice,
My condolences to you; this came as a surprise to me and truly saddened me.
Paul was a kind and supportive soul. I interacted with him through Robin and later throughout my involvement at the Centre for Teaching Excellence. Paul was always enthusiastic about teaching math and science, and I remember several conversations after the meetings. He always managed to make all people around him quite comfortable with his kind and patient attitude. This is a true loss for the community.

Paul was one of the very first colleagues I met when joining the Centre for Teaching Excellence in 2013. I distinctly remember our coffee chat at Dana Porter where he gave me the rundown of how the role works, and just told it like it was. Paul was a dependable, friendly, and knowledge colleague throughout our time working together. Sharing my sincere condolences to Robin and Alice.

All of us at the Centre for Teaching Excellence who worked with Paul will remember his seemingly unlimited capacity to help others in Math and beyond. He was unflappable, kind, learner- and learning-centred, and had a sense of humour that would come out at just the right time. My condolences to Robin and Alice through this enormous loss.

Paul has done so much to help navigate the ship, that we were all in, through the rough water during the pandemic period to come to berth with his many sound and easy-to-understand advices on online teaching. This is not to be forgotten by anyone of us any time soon. Thank you, Paul - Tony Wirjanto (a colleague of Paul from Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science, Faculty of Mathematics, University of Waterloo).

I am very saddened (and surprised) to hear of Paul's illness and passing. I have spent many 'hours' with Paul as he helped me get through the various webpages and tools involved in teaching here at UofW. We had many long discussions on the techniques and all the changes that have gone on here for so many years. No matter what my 'difficulty/problem' was, Paul was always ready to help, never in a rush, and always succeeded in finding the correct solution.
I considered Paul a colleague and a friend and this is a very sad loss.
To Robin and others of Paul's family and friends:
"May his memory be a blessing."

All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts
Paul was a son, a husband, a father, a colleague, and a friend.
Your role on stage has ended with great aplomb.
Rest well

I have fond memories of working with pkates in the pre-Mobius era, a.k.a. Maple T.A. Many a meeting were held in the MFCF hallway on the 3rd floor of MC with a coffee from the C+D or a pop from Ray Butterworth's office. You, me, and the Mr. Sean Scott would hammer out making the next set of algorithmic questions work, or plan the next instructor outreach workshop, or commiserate after server troubles during the most recent Math Readiness Test. The thing I remember most was your unwavering smile. Challenges were meant to be tackled and you never let the annoying stuff bog you down. I always enjoyed our chats. May you rest in peace now.
