The passing of Paul Norman Kates on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, aged 70, is announced with great sadness by wife Robin and daughter Alice. Predeceased by his parents Mary and Norman. Brother to Linda and David and Perry (deceased). Taken from us far too soon by a rare form of ocular cancer.
Supremely appreciated and praised by his clientele, as liaison from the Centre of Teaching Excellence to the Math Faculty of the University of Waterloo, to an extent perhaps never fully realized. Will forever be remembered for his laid-back attitude and his love of math and science, with a special appreciation for nature as well. Always felt at home at libraries and in bookstores. Consistently impressed all who met him. A nicer guy you've never met. But he didn't suffer fools gladly.
We will be forever grateful to Drs. Gilbert and Waldron from Princess Margaret Hospital Head and Neck clinic at the start of this journey. We would like to also thank PMH staff person Diana, nurse Claire and of course Drs. Spreafico and Hernando. Thanks as well to Dr. Kavalec for his support at the early stages.
A host of friends were invaluable in assisting the family throughout, so very special recognition goes to Brenda, Sandy, Ed, Jean, Gina and Andy, Gaurav, Liam, Johanne and Ron.
In the later stages, those who truly helped included Dr. Hannon from PMH Palliative, as well as Julie, Earnest, Richard and Peter. Many thanks to them.
Donations in Paul's name can be made to the charity of your choice. You may also consider pursuing your love of books with Wordsworth Books in Waterloo and think of Paul when you do.
Funeral service will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S, Waterloo on Thursday, August 15 at 12pm, with interment afterwards at Parkview Cemetery. The family asks you not to attend in person if feeling unwell. There will be a livestreaming option available.
Condolences for the family may be arranged HERE.
