I am so sorry to hear of Deborah's passing. She was a wonderful person, a loving mother and grandmother, a loyal and insightful friend. I will never forget her humour and the wonderful stories she told, and how genuinely interested she was in everyone she met. She asked amazing questions that got you thinking and was a wonderful conversationalist. I have so many treasured memories of my friendship with Deborah over the years, and I will never forget her. Allen, I am so sorry for your loss, I know she tried to hold on as long as she could for you.
We have made a donation to KW Hospital.

Dear Libby, Jeff, Tayla, Allan and Murray,
Words cannot express how saddened I am about Deborah’s death, filled with so many wonderful memories of her kindness and generosity. Often, when we visited Canada or Florida, she would greet us with a welcoming gift of fruit, thoughtfully including a knife to slice it. One year, when I led a tour group of senior citizens to Stratford, she visited a government office and got Ontario pins for each of us before we arrived.
She and her whole family could not have been more caring and wonderful to me if they had been our genuine blood relatives. It is all so ironic considering that Deborah and I shared a mutual cousin – who disliked both of us. Her loss!
Deborah was always admired, a role model for me in the eagerness with which she approached life – in healthier days – in her always stunning appearance and artistic sensibilities, her receptivity to experiences, and her delight in her Excalibur, her curiosity about and enjoyment of new people, frequent adventures and the joy she took in her family. She was one in a million.
We shared so many visits -- great restaurants, scenic spots, shopping -- and I was very pleased and flattered when she attended my Florida classes. Extra special were the two times she visited Chicago for my mother’s (94th and 100th) birthdays. What a delight. I only wish she could have stayed longer.
Being miles geographically apart did not curtail our wonderful friendship.
She will be forever remembered, never forgotten.
“Cousin” Beverly

To Allan, Libby and family,
I can remember vividly my first encounter with Deborah. My sister, Debbie and myself, answered an ad looking for a part-time babysitter. Deborah interviewed us, and even though I was a young teenager, she hired us. That was the beginning of the many years I spent together with the family.
I was so proud to help look after Libby for the years that I did. She became a part of me that I loved and adored, as did Deborah and Allan. I felt as though they were extended members of my family, and I an honorary daughter to theirs.
Over these years, I got to know Deborah's heart. She was incredibly kind, loving, patient, devoted, and generous, and always had a warm bright smile for everyone she would greet. She was a strong-willed woman who always reinforced positive thoughts and lessons she learned in life as examples to live by.
Deborah was beautiful inside and out. She was always put together and polished perfectly. She also had a great sense of humour and loved to laugh. Deborah was so full of life that it spilled over to the people around her, including me.
One of the memories that I think about often was when I travelled to Florida with the family. I went to the clubhouse with Deborah when she started to sing New York, New York. She loved singing that song with her arms stretched out wide, her jazz hands waving, and leg kick after leg kick! To this day, whenever I hear this song, I think of her.
My father called me to let me know Deborah had passed. So many thoughts and memories came flooding in, as did the tears. I realized that the love I had for Deborah and the family from years ago, is still with me all these years later. Deborah will always remain a part of me in life.
Allan, Libby and family. I share in your sorrow in this time of grief. She has left her imprint on the many lives that she touched over her lifetime, including mine.
I'm truly sorry that I couldn't attend Deborah's funeral. I have been unwell this last week, and I'm just starting to turn the corner. I would have loved to have personally extended my condolences to each of you in person. Please know that I was with you in spirit.
With love and eternal gratitude,
Cathie Strub Lemon

Libby, Jeff, and Tayla,
As you mourn the loss of your Mother and Grandmother, may you be surrounded by the knowledge that she was a beloved member of her community. She made a difference in the lives of many children and families with her donations to those who were struggling. She did this quietly and without the need for recognition out of the kindness of her heart. She was truly a woman with strength and compassion.

in 1983 Deborah took a chance with this teenager hired to clean the bakery. This started a chain of events which led to a long tenure in my first job ending as a baker. I made many friends there and while it was work and the work usually took place in the middle of the night it was a character building experience. Deborah always meted fairness and epitomized excellence. She carried herself with grace and I am pleased that we remained in touch on occasion...sometimes via a chance meeting here and there. My sincerest condolences to Allan and family. Those who remain in our hearts are never gone. Sincerely, Derek

It was approx. 28 years ago that this beautiful, petite, blonde lady came to my door and introduced herself as Deborah Asmussen or Mrs A. She told me she was going to be my daughter Chelsea's big sister. She seemed very kind and caring. I was very thankful for the help and support. Little did I know what would be for the coming years after that day!
That was the beginning of a lasting friendship that Chelsea, my family and myself would cherish forever.
Allan, Deborah and Libby became special to us all.
I will miss our phone chats about anything and everything.
Deborah was always there to listen when I needed an ear!
She was Chelsea's biggest cheerleader in what ever she did.
My cheerleader as well, with great advice.
I already miss her alot.
Allan, Libby, Jeff and Tayla I am so sorry for your loss. Cherish your memories of Deborah, who was a one of a kind special lady.
Love to you all.
Beth and family

It was only yesterday that Harold and I formed a friendship and socialized with Deborah and Allan. We were young, energetic, vibrant and ambitious to start/build our businesses! I can still see Deborah smiling and spotted with flour on opening day in the store on Belmont. Success soon followed and life was good. Our daughters Kelly and Libby were born and we shared many baby stories. After 18 years absence from K-W, we moved back in 2022 and Harold died over come by Parkinson. One of the first persons I called when we moved back was Deborah. We had a lengthy conversation (including the topic of Parkinson) with the promise of having coffee together—there were still sooo many topics of which to catch up. Dear Allan, Libby, Tayla, Jeff—my arms go around you with love—Deborah was a special person. I am presently in Germany and I am sorry I am not able to attend your tribute to Deborah

Hello Libby, I'm so sorry for your loss. Your mum was an amazing presence and one of the only female entrepreneurs that I saw as a child. She was an amazing, larger-than-life presence to me! Her donut shop was the place that my mum and I went to all the time to connect, and my mum and your mum connected there too! I still remember sightings of her amazing car all over town. I'll be thinking of you and wish you well as you support your dad and daughter through this time. Don't forget to take the time you need to look out for your own care too. Hugs, Becky Zettl

Carole and I remember fondly attending Deborah and Allan’s garden wedding. We were there because Allan I have been friends since childhood. Although we left the Twin cities shortly after Allan and Deborah were married, we followed their successful careers in the doughnut business with delight, and I have always called Allan on his birthday, two days before mine. It is hard to see a friend go, and especially hard to see Deborah go, who has led such a beautiful life. We send our deepest condolences to you, Allan, and to your family.

I was saddened to learn of Deborah's passing today. She was a beautiful person, inside and out and to say she was an outstanding business woman would be an understatement. Deborah employed my mother, Hilda Sellner, in the Belmont Village Donut Shop in my mom's senior years on a part time basis and she remarked many times that it was the perfect fit to transition to from years of full time work as she got older. Deborah was in my mom's words "the perfect boss" and their long time friendship was not tarnished in the least when they became employer and employee. I extend sincere sympathy to Allen, Libby and their entire family at this time and know that although they will truly miss this wonderful woman, they will no doubt recall with a smile the many wonderful memories shared over the years.
