Obituary of Lester Gill
Died peacefully in his sleep, on January 27, 2012 in his 94th year of natural causes.
Loving husband to Rhoda (nee Parsons), his wife of over 64 years; devoted father to Greg (Cathy) of Guelph, Ontario; Gary (Guylaine) of Bromont, Quebec and Gina of Ottawa, Ontario. Cherished grandfather of Caitlin and LeeAnn. Also survived by his brother Hedley Gill and his sister Madge Barnes in Newfoundland. He will be missed by many friends and extended family members.
Born in 1918 on Pinchard's Island, Newfoundland, Lester spent his childhood in Middlebrook and started his teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in 1935 at the age of seventeen. He served with the British Liberation Army during WWII as a member of the 23rd Battery, 59th (Newfoundland) Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery. After taking teacher training at Memorial University (formerly College) in St. John's, Newfoundland, he graduated from McGill University with a B.A. in 1952. He taught for many years with the English Protestant School Board in the Montreal area, and later in Ontario until his retirement in 1983. A man of strong faith in God, he was actively involved in the Alpha course.
The funeral service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church, 400 Northfield Drive (entrance off Highpoint Ave.) in Waterloo, Ontario on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 11 a.m. A reception at the church will follow.
