Obituary of David Carter

It is with utmost sadness that we share the news of the passing of David T. Carter. Dave fought valiantly in the face of a sudden and overwhelming illness but quietly succumbed with dignity on the morning of February 12, 2012. He was buoyed by the excellent care of the staff of the ICU at St Mary's Hospital, and surrounded by his adoring family. David is survived by his wife and soul-mate of 43 years, Barbara, his proud children, Brian and Jill, and his son-in-law, David Framst. Nothing brought a sparkle to Dave's eyes more than the excited cries of "Grampa's here" from his youngest but biggest fans, Nate and Connor. We will all treasure memories of a recent adventure to the Dominican Republic where Dave continued to lead us with his endless exuberance and ability to appreciate the magic of each shared moment. David was predeceased by his in-laws, Richard and Evelyn Breen, as well as his small but mighty family: father Reginald, mother Margaret, and big brother Bill Carter. His family's compassion and fellowship were expressed daily in Dave's commitment to volunteerism as well as his devotion to family, university, and community. He delighted in sharing holiday traditions with the extended Carter families in Windsor, Midhurst, Paris, and Wales. Dave was best known for his over-sized heart and his passion for life; his desire to help those around him seemed limitless. Despite being a lifelong learner, a celebrated athlete and dedicated advocate for the disenfranchised, he never missed an opportunity to cheer on members of his community - whether a child or grandchild's first at bat, a student's graduation, or a friend in need of support. A professor by trade, he was a coach and mentor to all who knew him. Although he grew to love his adopted Kitchener home, in his heart he was always a loyal son of Windsor. Friends are invited to share their memories of Dave with his family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial to celebrate Dave's life will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at 3 p.m. The interment will take place in the family plot at Victoria Memorial Cemetery, Windsor on a later date. Condolences may be expressed as donations to one of Dave's cherished commitments: Extend-A-Family, the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation, or the scholarship held in his name at the University of Waterloo's School of Accountancy. All gifts may be arranged through the funeral home, (519) 745-8445 or www.erbgood.com.
