Dear Steve, I was very deeply saddened to receive your e-mail advising of Aleksandra's death on June 29. Memories came flooding back- principally of Sherbrooke years we shared when we saw so much more of one another and you were all so kind to me: - Wonderful evenings of conversation, sometimes in French, with Aleksandra and her mother and often punctuated by Aleksandre having to stuff out a cigarette and try to make the smell go away when someone she didn't want to know of her smoking came into the room - I seem to remember even claiming to be the one smoking on at least one occasion.
- of many great meals at your home and of you and Aleksandra opening up (a little) about the Warsaw years.
-of the 'difficult conversation" the evening that Ludwik got into Zbyszek's photographic chemicals as to whether he should be moved to Sherbrooke hospital while you were away somewhere.
-of Aleksandra desperately trying to quiet Ludwik's screams in some ski lodge as his feet warmed up after coming in from a few hours of bitterly cold skiing.
-and so many more, including the wonderful hospitality you all provided me during my preliminary visit to Brazil and in all these succeeding years.
My sincerest condolences to you and all your family in your very sad loss.

My dearest Friend Lu, I am very sorry for the loss you and your family have experienced at the end of June. We have an Italian saying that goes this way, "La mamma è sempre la mamma!" Your love for languages will allow you to translate this little saying, I'm sure. I did not know the sad news on Tuesday when we saw each other at St. David HS for the IL Program, otherwise I would have shared a good bear hug, instead of a simple, yet sincere handshake. I hope to see you in the next few days - maybe for that famous coffee I owe you! - unfortunately, though, I will not be able to be at Sacred Heart for Olenka's funeral.
