Hard to believe, Phil, that you left us already a year ago, but we remember you and your sense of humour not an iota less! Rest in peace.

Professor Eastman, as I came to know him, was my physics professor in a Physics of Music class around 1985 at UW. I have two fond memories of this class. First, Prof. Eastman arriving late to class with hunting clothing on ready to demonstrate liquid nitrogen's effects on various materials such as bananas and balloons. I also remember him burning a hole in the classroom table while demonstrating the Lorentz force with a magnet and car battery. Prof. Eastman short circuited the battery with a metal rod and showed the Lorentz force but the almost molten rod dropped on the table and almost set the room on fire which flustered him a bit. It was very funny. Good memories of a great teacher because he loved teaching physics. I am now a high school physics teacher and can thank Prof. Eastman for teaching me to "keep it real" and "down to earth" for students. Thank you Prof. Eastman

Dr. Eastman taught me physics at Waterloo between 1963 and 1966, nearly 50 years ago. I think it says a lot about the impression he made that I would remember him all these years, and pick up immediately upon this obituary. My recollections of him are these: 1) he was a darn good teacher, and 2) he was way smarter than I was. He would have enjoyed the Captcha needed to leave this message: "What is 7 + 8?" My sincere condolences to all who miss him.

Whether driving or walking by, Dr. Phil would always stop to say hello, share a story, and inevitably a groan-inspiring joke or brain teaser. Sage, Juniper and Finch all loved his fly-by visits and he was always interested in their daily goings-on. He was quick to share advice, ladders, and tools when we were adding on to the house, and produce from his garden (loved the Jerusalem artichokes!) We're all sad to have to say goodbye to Dr. Phil, and his cheerful presence in the neighbourhood will be missed.

I am so sad to hear of Phil's passing. I knew Phil through the UWRA (University of Waterloo Retirees Association). I was a UW staff member who had the pleasant task of sitting in on their meetings. I often said that it was the highlight of my month to be with this group of people. Phil was so witty and funny and kind and I really adored him. My prayers to his family.

Farewell to a well-remembered pal from our high school and college days. I was in the same high school class in Burlington and shared many good times with Phil. We both went on to McMaster and graduated at the same time. I remember him commuting to McMaster on his well-travelled motorcycle, rain or shine. After Mac, we went on our separate career paths, seeing each other rrarely but there was always a joke or another ghastly pun to endure when we met. He had the greatest store of word-wit of any one I knew, then or since. Sincere condolences to Wynne and family. So long old pal.

Philip Eastman. There is so much to say. Philip was smart. I was always number one in my class until Philip arrived at Burlington High School. After that, I had to settle for number two. Philip could fix anything. Our first project was to fix up an old motorcycle and sell it for a profit. Philip was adventurous. One year we rode our small motorcycles to the Maritimes. Another year we rode to Mississippi and Florida. Philip was frugal. On our motorcycle trips we never once paid for accommodation or a restaurant meal. We slept on the ground wherever we were, and lived on bread and pork and beans straight out of the can. Philip was funny, or should I say "punny". He had a joke, usually a "groaner", for every occasion. Philip loved life. He was always "up" and interested in everyone and everything. Philip's presence made every room a happier and more interesting place. Philip was my best buddy during an important phase of my life. He will be missed, big time.
