Obituary of Philip Eastman

Passed away at Grand River Hospital, Kitchener on September 3, 2012 at the age of 80. Philip is survived by his beloved wife Wynne (nee Hubbert), two sons, Gordon (Susan) Eastman, Sidney (Kathy) Eastman, grandchildren Sarah, Matthew, Jessica, Lauren and Dane Eastman. Also survived by his sister Elaine Eastman, brother Donald Eastman, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents Clifford Eugene Eastman and Jane Elizabeth Ritchie as well as his sister Lois Unsworth. Philip, a retired Physics Professor, taught for over 30 years at the University of Waterloo. In order to link high schools across Canada with the Physics programmes of his University, he originated the Sir Isaac Newton scholarship test. For managing this challenging brain teaser for several decades, he received the prestigious Michael J. Smith, National Research Council Award. Recently he edited the WATtimes, a newsletter for retired employees of the University. Philip served as a faithful member of Highland Baptist Church. As an outreach of the church, he actively supported Camp Hermosa near Goderich. There he undertook many roles including building the Nature Cabin, working on building maintenance and being on the Property Board. Expressed in many ways, Philip loved children. Always enjoying his grandchildren, he even taught Lauren and Dane a lesson on the centre of gravity just five days before he died. He was an avid supporter of pro-life groups including the local Right to Life organization. Philip and Wynne shared many joint activities including travel, Israeli praise dancing and working on an extensive Eastman genealogy. Remembered by family and friends for his cheerful wit, he always came up with an abundance of jokes and puns. During his recent illness he received numerous and extraordinary tributes from people whose lives he had influenced over the years. As one neighbor put it, "He was loved by all." Friends are invited to share their memories of Philip with his family during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 6- 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Highland Baptist Church, 135 Highland Road West, Kitchener on Friday, September 7 at 11:00 am with the Rev.
