Hi Suzanne, Julia and Lauren,
Mark had many friends growing up and six of us gathered tonight to raise a few pints and celebrate our long friendships. Many years have passed since high school and university but knowing Mark and his infectious enthusiasm made us better and more worldly people. Mark introduced us to cutting edge rock music, we went to concerts, celebrated many long weekends at the beach, went skiing, played golf and had many giggles. Mark had boundless energy and it was hard to keep up to him. Never at a loss for an opinion and not too shy to share it. His reputation preceded him and he generously cared for his friends. He taught me how to downhill ski with very unique tutelage (i.e., 15 second head start before getting hip checked).
The last time I saw Mark was in 1989 when he helped us to buy our home in West Montrose. Our families were young and the demands for our time many. Since the news of his passing arrived, I have had countless thoughts of great moments with Mark. He is missed by many.
Six of us gathered tonight to celebrate Mark; three in Calgary and three on the phone. Specifically, David Chadder, Alister Thomas and Bill Golbeck in Calgary; John Oswald in Toronto, Maurice Plomske in Halifax and John Todd in Alberta. Strong positive feelings were shared and our bonds to each other were re-affirmed. John Oswald will attend tomorrows reception for Mark and share some of our feelings in person.
Mark was a great friend and we are better people for knowing him. We miss him too.
