I had my own father for only 38 years, but you have been my father-in-law for nearly 40 years. Jeremy and Justin knew their other grandfather only during their childhood years, so you have been their only grandfather for their teen and adult years. Thank you for providing that fatherly/grandfatherly guidance that everyone needs in their lives. Your advice and support for all of our family endeavors, including our many travels and adventures to remote places, enriched the lives of my family members. And even when your health was failing you still encouraged Monica and me to accept the position in Washington, despite it putting great physical distance between us. I can only hope that you felt that the spiritual and emotional connection was still as close as ever.
Most of all, thank you for giving your daughter to me in marriage and for taking me into your heart like a son. It was an honour for me to have had you in my life, and I will miss you sorely. I felt your pain and suffering as your time approached; now rest in peace.

I thank God for every day we had you in our lives. You taught us so much about kindness, forgiveness, integrity and honour, although I still have much to process. I am so grateful that I had the chance to tell you how much you meant to me, how much I love you and how I will miss you.
