When I think on dear old dad
and all he means to me,
My heart recalls a giggling child
A-bouncing on his knee.
Or being pulled upon a sled
Out in the blustery snow.
Or asking all the toughest things
That only Dad would know.
My adult mind now understands
That parenting is hard.
And yet I feel the child inside
Still playing in the yard.
And what that child remembers,
My adult self holds dear;
Like hearing horns and beeps and such
When tugging on Dad's ear.
The things he made with his own hands
For me in younger days,
Still now adorn my adult home
Enjoyed in other ways.
So too, the memories he made
While I was just a girl,
Although they're viewed with adult eyes,
Still decorate my world.
The greatest gift a Dad can give
My father gave to me.
A piece of who my father is
Became a part of me.

We were so sorry to hear from friends about Doug's passing. I usually read the paper, but somehow missed it. We rather lost tract of you two, Ann, but are remembering all the wonderful times we enjoyed in each others company in Kin. Take care, and cherish all your wonderful memories.

Our backyard had a garden/
That you tended every day/
Not just growing food for us/
But teaching us the way//
To cultivate a living/
But more than that; a life./
And that anything worth having/
Is bought with toil and strife.//
Spending time with seedlings,/
Weeding out, with care,/
Anything that hinders/
The growth that happens there.//
Setting up foundations/
Black earth to build us up./
Coaxing richness from the soil/
As you coaxed the best from us.//
Now you've left the earth behind you/
No longer do you toil/
Yet your heart lives on forever;/
Your soul is in the soil//
Now you're tending Heaven's Garden/
Feeding all the angels there/
With your kind of silent love,/
Your persistent brand of care.//
Now you're tending Heaven's Garden/
Nourishing with pride/
The better part of all of us/
Our wholesome, health-some side.//
Yes, we all tend Heaven's Garden/
In everything we do/
In how we treat each other/
In what we say and do//
And when it's time to Harvest/
All the fruits it's come to bear/
We'll all tend Heaven's Garden/
And find the peace we planted there.//
