I never knew Arnulf personally but I have just been reading his 1967 Masters Thesis on Flicker Halos as it informs my own research. His loved ones may be comforted to know that Arnulf's legacy in vision research still lives on.

Our Optometry Class's first exposure to Arnie was, unfortunately, characterized by derision. The subject he has teaching us (Physiological Optics) was conceptionaly a very difficult subject for first year student to comprehend. It was very difficult for us to follow what Arnie was trying to teach us. We were initially critical of him largely because of our inability to follow his teachings.
It wasn't long before we recognized that his knowledge and understanding of the subject. His level of intelligence was so far above us that we had difficulty keeping up in his class. By the time that his course was completed, we had such respect for him and his ability to guide us through this very difficult subject.

As a 1981 grad, I had the privilege of having Dr. Remole as an instructor, but I also was very fortunate to be employed by him as a research assistant. I respected him greatly, and think of him often, for his insightful intelligence and attention to detail. His enthusiasm for his research was palpable. I learned a lot from him, and I appreciated the manner in which he respected his assistants and solicited our opinions.
May he rest in peace.

I was very fortunate to have Dr. Remole as both a professor while a student at Waterloo and also as a research supervisor for a couple of summers during my optometry training. He was of course a very brilliant man and had incredible insight into the remarkable functioning of the brain and visual system. I think his combination of being a gifted artist but also a fine clinical mind exemplifies optometry in the very best ways. My sincere sympathies to the family.

As well as being one of his many students at the School of Optometry, I had the privilege of working for him as an undergrad research assistant in the summer of 1978. To this day, I have not met anyone with Dr. Remole's combination of brilliance, talent and gentlemanly manner. My condolences to his family and friends.

Both Karen and I were sad to hear of Dr. Remole's passing. As first- and second-year students in the late 1980s, Dr. Remole was optics. Never in my life, preceding or following his instruction, have I seen a person draw a straighter line or a rounder circle ... even the blur circles were perfect. Handouts were clear, concise, and three-hole punched. His passion for his profession was admirable, and his sense of humour did not go unappreciated. Please accept our condolences - Dr. Remole will be missed.

Dr. A. Remole was my geometrical optics professor from 1983 to 1987. I remember him to be a dedicated researcher and teacher. He was the one to tackle the difficult problems of optics. He was a prolific writer of scientific papers. He was able to freely draw pictures on the black board and on paper with much ease. I found out soon enough that he was a fine artist. His good sense of humour will be missed. Rest in Peace.

I was a student of Dr Remole's at UW Optometry program from 1982-1986. I remember him as a kind man with a great sense of humour and always available to help us learn the (sometimes challenging) topics he taught. I had no idea he was an artist. My condolences to his family for your loss.

Annie was in our class at Optometry school, He was the BRAIN of the class , a quiet, earnest student who was always ready to help his fellow classmates. He was our Valedictarian and deservedly so. The School was lucky to have him as a professor.
Optometry has lost a great contributor to our profession.

I graduated in 1966 , and memories of my optometric education always include an image of Arnie explaining a something to us with twinkle in his eye, and a hint that he could tell you even more about it but his job was to arouse curiosity not to supply all the answers.. He will be remembered by me as a delightful, kind, and multitalented man.

Dr. Remole was the classic "nutty professor" during my time at Waterloo. He was extremely bright and I enjoyed his class immensely. He had a great sense of humour and always answered my questions with kindness, helpfulness and humility. Looking back on my time in school, his class may have been the most interesting. In many ways, he will always be remembered.

I was fortunate to have Dr. Remole is one of my professors during my studies in Optometry at UW during the early 1970's. He was a great teacher, with a fabulous sense of humor. He was always available to help us if we had a problem with our study of optics. Most of us never knew he was such a talented artist as well! He will be missed but never forgotten.
