Obituary of John Visser
VISSER, J.F. (Jack), 89, passed away on Sept. 3rd, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Survived by his wife Neryl Giroux-Piper, son Michael (Jane) Visser of Centerville, Ohio and daughter Michele of Waterloo. Grandpa Jack will be dearly missed by his five grandchildren: Corey, Emma-Jane Visser and Zachary, Benjamin, Nathan Schnarr, and relatives in Holland. Jack was predeceased by Henny Visser (Jager), his loving wife for 35 years and by his son John Visser Jr.
Born and raised in Holland, Jack was active in the Underground Resistance in WWll, served in the Indonesian War, then became a Police Inspector. In 1957 the family emigrated to Canada. He worked 30 years in the Trust Company business and 6 years at Tiger Brand Knitting.
A Waterloo resident for 30 years and a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Waterloo, Jack was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was one of the founders and 1st President of the Backboard Club at U of W.
In 2000, Jack moved to Hamilton and became a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He faithfully attended McMaster b-ball games and was into jogging, aerobics, yoga, cycling, gardening and jazz. He was a member of the Senior Mac Fitness Club and Aqua Sonic program. At 79, he wrote a memoir entitled "From Within". Above all, his passion was his family. Jack lived life to the fullest. He was the most positive and optimistic person. Jack had a gloriously happy life.
Jack's family will receive friends during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Friday, September 12, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 11am with a reception to follow in the Fireside Reception Room.
